Journal ArticleDOI
Survival of Mycobacterium avium, Legionella pneumophila, Escherichia coli, and caliciviruses in drinking water-associated biofilms grown under high-shear turbulent flow.
Markku J. Lehtola,Eila Torvinen,Jaana Kusnetsov,Tarja Pitkänen,Leena Maunula,Carl-Henrik von Bonsdorff,Pertti J. Martikainen,Sandra A. Wilks,C. William Keevil,Ilkka T. Miettinen +9 more
TL;DR: It is proved that pathogenic bacteria entering water distribution systems can survive in biofilms for at least several weeks, even under conditions of high-shear turbulent flow, and may be a risk to water consumers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Minimizing errors in RT-PCR detection and quantification of SARS-CoV-2 RNA for wastewater surveillance
Warish Ahmed,Stuart L. Simpson,Paul M. Bertsch,Kyle Bibby,Aaron Bivins,Linda L. Blackall,Sílvia Bofill-Mas,Albert Bosch,João Brandão,Phil M. Choi,Phil M. Shanks +73 more
TL;DR: A technical review of factors that can lead to false-positive and -negative errors in the surveillance of SARS-CoV-2, culminating in recommendations and strategies that can be implemented to identify and mitigate these errors.
Journal ArticleDOI
The detection and stability of the SARS-CoV-2 RNA biomarkers in wastewater influent in Helsinki, Finland.
Anna Maria Hokajärvi,Annastiina Rytkönen,Ananda Tiwari,Ari Kauppinen,Sami Oikarinen,Kirsi Lehto,Aino Kankaanpää,Teemu Gunnar,Haider Al-Hello,Soile Blomqvist,Ilkka T. Miettinen,Carita Savolainen-Kopra,Tarja Pitkänen,Tarja Pitkänen +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of storage conditions on the RNA copy numbers of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in wastewater influent was studied and compared to the persistence of norovirus over time at 4°C, -20°C and -75°C using the reverse-transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) assays E-Sarbeco, N2, and Norovirus GII.
Journal ArticleDOI
Review of Campylobacter spp. in drinking and environmental waters
TL;DR: Molecular methods, especially quantitative PCR applications, are important to use in the detection of environmental Campylobacter spp.
Journal ArticleDOI
An extensive gastroenteritis outbreak after drinking-water contamination by sewage effluent, Finland
Janne Laine,Elisa Huovinen,M. J. Virtanen,Marja Snellman,Jukka Lumio,Petri Ruutu,Kujansuu E,Risto Vuento,Tarja Pitkänen,Ilkka T. Miettinen,Herrala J,O. Lepistö,Jaakko Antonen,Helenius J,M.-L. Hänninen,Leena Maunula,Jukka Mustonen,Markku Kuusi +17 more
TL;DR: A population-based questionnaire investigation with a control population allowed us to differentiate baseline morbidity from the observed morbidity caused by the water contamination, thus enabling a more accurate estimate of the disease burden of this outbreak.
