Cloning and Genomic Organization of Beclin 1, a Candidate Tumor Suppressor Gene on Chromosome 17q21
Vincent M. Aita,Xiao Huan Liang,Vundavalli V. Murty,David L. Pincus,Weiping Yu,Eftihia Cayanis,Sergei Kalachikov,T. Conrad Gilliam,Beth Levine +8 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that human breast carcinoma cell lines frequently contain allelic deletions of beClin 1, but not beclin 1 coding mutations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Alopecia Universalis Associated with a Mutation in the Human hairless Gene
Wasim Ahmad,Muhammad Faiyaz ul Haque,Valeria Brancolini,Hui C. Tsou,Sayed ul Haque,HaMut Lam,Vincent M. Aita,Jason E. Owen,Michelle deBlaquiere,Jorge Frank,P. B. Cserhalmi-Friedman,Andrew Leask,John A. McGrath,Monica Peacocke,Mahmud Ahmad,Jurg Ott,Angela M. Christiano +16 more
TL;DR: A kindred with a rare, recessively inherited type of alopecia universalis was used to search for a locus by homozygosity mapping, and linkage was established in a 6-centimorgan interval on chromosome 8p12 (the logarithm of the odds favoring linkage score was 6.19 as discussed by the authors ).
Journal ArticleDOI
Desmoglein 4 in Hair Follicle Differentiation and Epidermal Adhesion: Evidence from Inherited Hypotrichosis and Acquired Pemphigus Vulgaris
Ana Kljuic,Hisham Bazzi,John P. Sundberg,Amalia Martinez-Mir,Ryan F.L. O'Shaughnessy,My G. Mahoney,Moise L. Levy,Xavier Montagutelli,Wasim Ahmad,Wasim Ahmad,Vincent M. Aita,Derek Gordon,Jouni Uitto,David A. Whiting,Jurg Ott,Stuart G. Fischer,T. Conrad Gilliam,Colin A.B. Jahoda,Rebecca J. Morris,Andrei A. Panteleyev,Vu Thuong Nguyen,Angela M. Christiano +21 more
TL;DR: Evidence is provided that desmoglein 4 is a key mediator of keratinocyte cell adhesion in the hair follicle, where it coordinates the transition from proliferation to differentiation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exposing the human nude phenotype
Jorge Frank,Claudio Pignata,Andrei A. Panteleyev,David M. Prowse,Howard P. Baden,Lorin Weiner,L. Gaetaniello,Wasim Ahmad,N. Pozzi,P. B. Cserhalmi-Friedman,Vincent M. Aita,Hendrik Uyttendaele,Derek Gordon,Jurg Ott,Janice L. Brissette,Angela M. Christiano +15 more
TL;DR: A genetic analysis is carried out that reveals a human homologue of the nude mouse, the best known of the ‘bald’ mouse phenotypes, the nude mice.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Comprehensive Linkage Analysis of Chromosome 21q22 Supports Prior Evidence for a Putative Bipolar Affective Disorder Locus
Vincent M. Aita,Jianjun Liu,James A. Knowles,Joseph D. Terwilliger,Romulo Baltazar,Adina Grunn,J E Loth,Kyra Kanyas,Bernard Lerer,Jean Endicott,Zhenyuan Wang,Penchaszadeh Gk,T. Conrad Gilliam,Miron Baron +13 more
TL;DR: This study demonstrated evidence of linkage to bipolar affective disorder (BP) in a single large, multigenerational family with a LOD score of 3.41 at the PFKL locus on chromosome 21q22, with 31 microsatellite markers at an average marker spacing of =2 cM, in the largest multigenersational BP pedigree series reported to date.
