The Structure of Mediterranean Rocky Reef Ecosystems across Environmental and Human Gradients, and Conservation Implications
Enric Sala,Enric Ballesteros,Panagiotis Dendrinos,Antonio Di Franco,Francesco Ferretti,David G. Foley,David G. Foley,Simonetta Fraschetti,Alan M. Friedlander,Joaquim Garrabou,Harun Güçlüsoy,Paolo Guidetti,Benjamin S. Halpern,Bernat Hereu,Alexandros A. Starr,Fiona Tomas,Mikel Zabala +28 more
TL;DR: The gradients reported here represent a trajectory of degradation that can be used to assess the health of any similar habitat in the Mediterranean, and to evaluate the efficacy of marine protected areas.
Journal ArticleDOI
Alien Marine Fishes Deplete Algal Biomass in the Eastern Mediterranean
TL;DR: Underwater fish censuses and observations suggest that Siganus luridus and S. rivulatus from the Red Sea are responsible for the creation and maintenance of these benthic communities with extremely low biomass.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tropical rabbitfish and the deforestation of a warming temperate sea
Adriana Vergés,Fiona Tomas,Fiona Tomas,Emma Cebrian,Enric Ballesteros,Zafer Kizilkaya,Panagiotis Dendrinos,Alexandros A. Karamanlidis,David Spiegel,Enric Sala +9 more
TL;DR: Video-recorded feeding experiments showed that the extensive barrens characteristic of regions with abundant rabbitfish were not due to greater rates of herbivory by these tropical consumers, but rather by functional differences among the herbivores.
Journal ArticleDOI
