TL;DR: Polarization rotation rate and magnitude of the polarization change were recorded for more than 1330 hours over 22 months of monitoring of a 750-km aerial fiber.
Abstract: We present state of polarization measurements from long-term monitoring of a 750-km aerial fiber. Polarization rotation rate and magnitude of the polarization change were recorded for more than 1330 hours over 22 months.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and system for generating an optical channel signal for transmission through an optical fiber link of an optical communications system is presented, where a digital filter processes an input data signal using a compensation function and a shaping function to generate a pair of multi-bit sample streams representing a target optical E-field envelope of the optical channel signals.
Abstract: A method and system for generating an optical channel signal for transmission through an optical fiber link of an optical communications system. A digital filter processes an input data signal using a compensation function and a shaping function to generate a pair of multi-bit sample streams representing a target optical E-field envelope of the optical channel signal. A modulator modulates an optical carrier light using the pair of multi-bit sample streams to generate the optical channel signal. The compensation function is designed to at least partially compensate impairments of the optical fiber link. The predetermined shaping function is designed to modify a baseband spectrum of the target optical E-field envelope.

TL;DR: In this article, a quantitative description of the effects of fiber endface defects such as scratches and digs is given in terms of a single parameter, which is a measure of the increase in backscattering due to the defect.
Abstract: A quantitative description of the effects of fiber endface defects such as scratches and digs does not exist in the literature. We show, by considering surface scattering from the fiber endface, that such a description can be given in terms of a single parameter, which is a measure of the increase in backscattering due to the defect. We present our results in terms of some assumed values of this parameter.

TL;DR: In this article, performance monitoring (PM) data is stored in a database in a manner that supports different PM data sets from different network element (NE) device types in an integrated manner.
Abstract: The present disclosure provides systems and methods for handling performance monitoring (PM) data in a database in a manner that supports different PM data sets from different network element (NE) device types in an integrated manner. The present invention defines a single database structure that can be utilized to store, handle, retrieve, etc. PM counters from multiple NEs including NEs of different types, e.g. SONET/SDH NE, DWDM NE, optical switch, Ethernet switch, etc. The single database enables an efficient mechanism to handle PM data in a uniform way across a network with different device types.
