TL;DR: In this paper, a system for providing optical connections that may include an optical grating structure and an optical waveguide coupled to the grating was presented. But the optical grated structure was not considered.
Abstract: A system for providing optical connections that may include an optical grating structure and an optical waveguide coupled to the optical grating structure. The optical grating structure may be configured to receive an optical wave, through an interposer, from an optical source. The optical grating structure may be configured to transform the optical wave into a predetermined electromagnetic propagation mode.

TL;DR: In this paper, a network device including a central timing subsystem for distributing one or more timing reference signals including a main timing signal and an embedded timing signal is presented, which reduces the routing resources necessary to route the timing signal(s) within the network device.
Abstract: The present invention provides a network device including a central timing subsystem for distributing one or more timing reference signals including a main timing signal and an embedded timing signal. Embedding one timing signal within another reduces the routing resources necessary to route the timing signal(s) within the network device. In addition, one central timing system, as opposed to two or more, may be used to provide multiple different synchronous clock signals. In one embodiment, the main timing signal is used for network data transfer while the embedded signal is used at least for processor synchronization. Consequently, a separate central timing subsystem is not required for generation and distribution of processor timing reference signals, and separate routing resources are not required for the processor timing reference signals. In addition, separate local timing subsystems for both the central timing and processor timing are not necessary. Embedding the processor timing reference signal within a highly accurate, redundant external timing reference signal also provides a highly accurate and redundant processor timing reference signal, and having a common local timing subsystem is more efficient resulting in less design time, less debug time, less risk, design re-use and simulation re-use.

TL;DR: In this paper, the state-of-polarization (SOP) and polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) were observed on three routes monitored using deployed coherent 40 Gb/s transponders.
Abstract: We present 18 months of field observations on the state-of-polarization (SOP) and polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) on three routes monitored using deployed coherent 40 Gb/s transponders. Two fiber paths were monitored on each of three different routes, ranging from 30 km with one amplified span to 273 km with seven amplified spans. In general, the changes in SOP and PMD were slow, with the autocorrelation half-width-half-maxima ranging from 1.3 to 4.1 days for the differential-group-delay and from 0.18 to 1.7 days for the SOP. We observed the largest correlation of active periods between fiber paths sharing the same cable and weak correlation with fiber paths sharing an office. With over 10,000 hours of measurements spanning an 18-month period, we believe this to be the most extensive study published on the polarization behavior of buried fiber.

TL;DR: In this article, a mesh protection service (MPS) module transmits an MPS message signal using uni-directional communications, which identifies the first working links, and a controller in communication with the monitor module is notified of a failure in the first link.
Abstract: An embodiment of the invention is a network element including a monitor module for monitoring received network traffic on a uni-directional, first working link and detecting a failure in the first working link. A controller in communication with the monitor module is notified of a failure in the first working link. A mesh protection service (MPS) module is in communication with the controller. The MPS module transmits an MPS message signal using uni-directional communications. The MPS message signal identifies the first working links.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a method, implemented in a node, for supporting a Flexible Ethernet (FlexE) client service in a network includes receiving a FlexE client; and at least one of monitoring and updating one or more Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) fields in FlexE overhead.
Abstract: A node configured to support a Flexible Ethernet (FlexE) client service in a network includes circuitry configured to receive a FlexE client; and circuitry configured to at least one of monitor and update one or more Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) fields in FlexE overhead, wherein the OAM fields cover a single client path along many network segments (sections) for the FlexE client.
