TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present systems and methods to mix In-Band and Out-of-Band (OOB) signaling mechanisms under the Private Network-to-Network (PNNI) protocol for optical control plane connectivity.
Abstract: The present invention provides systems and methods to mix In-Band (IB) and Out-of-Band (OOB) signaling mechanisms under the Private Network-to-Network (PNNI) protocol for optical control plane connectivity. The present invention provides mechanisms for establishing and controlling OOB control plane communications. By default, the mechanisms treat all links as IB to discover nodes and links using IB mechanisms. For any blocked links, the link can be configured as OOB if there is a data communication network (DCN) connection to the remote node.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a method of fault notification in a carrier Ethernet having the capability of generating and transmitting OAM packets having flag fields, which comprises inserting a bit in one of the flag fields to indicate the presence of service-affecting information in the OAM packet.
Abstract: A method of fault notification in a carrier Ethernet having the capability of generating and transmitting OAM packets having flag fields, comprises inserting a bit in one of the flag fields to indicate the presence of service-affecting information in the OAM packets, detecting the presence of the inserted bit at the end of a data path, and performing a service protection action in response to the detection of the inserted bit prior to parsing the information in the message. One type of service protection action is protection switching.

TL;DR: In this article, a WDM ring configuration with a central office node is presented, in which each channel has substantially the same loss and no single channel has a disproportionately high loss.
Abstract: A WDM ring configuration having a central office node is provided in which each channel has substantially the same loss and no single channel has a disproportionately high loss. Thus, the diameter of the WDM ring in accordance with the present invention can be increased and/or the number of filters provided along the ring can be increased to accommodate additional channels.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a mechanism for fault synchronization in a bidirectional data network, where a downstream endpoint receives a first Alarm Indication Signal (AIS) and a second Remote Defect Indication (RDI) identifying the downstream endpoint.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for optimizing fault synchronization in a bidirectional data network are provided. In an example, a downstream endpoint of the data network receives a first Alarm Indication Signal (AIS). The first AIS indicates a first FLI of an upstream interface having an interface fault. The downstream endpoint transmits, to an upstream endpoint of the data network, a second AIS including a Remote Defect Indication (RDI) and a second FLI identifying the downstream endpoint. An upstream endpoint of the data network receives the second AIS and determines that the AIS is an AIS-RDI (AIS-RDI) from the presence of the second FLI. The presence of the AIS-RDI triggers the upstream endpoint to initiate tunnel failure synchronization with the downstream endpoint.

TL;DR: In this article, a serial data stream is mapped through a cross-connect via two or more parallel independent shelves, and then the sub-streams are recombined to form an output data stream equivalent to the original data stream.
Abstract: A serial data stream is mapped through a cross-connect via two or more parallel independent shelves. The serial data stream is split into at least two sub-streams. If the lead frame of a sub-stream contains a concatenation indicator, it is replacing by a valid payload pointer, and a split indicator is inserted into the frame. Each of the sub-streams is then mapped through the cross-connect via a respective parallel independent shelf. Finally, the sub-streams are recombined to form an output serial data stream equivalent to the original serial data stream. If the lead frame of a sub-stream contains a split indicator, a concatenation indicator is inserted into the corresponding frame of the output serial data stream to restore the concatenation of the original serial data stream. Otherwise, a payload pointer within the lead frame is replaced by a valid payload pointer in the corresponding frame of the output data stream.
