Abstract: Service-based applications have become more and more multi-layered in nature, as we tend to build software as a service on top of infrastructure as a service. Most existing SOA monitoring and adaptation techniques address layer-specific issues. These techniques, if used in isolation, cannot deal with real-world domains, where changes in one layer often affect other layers, and information from multiple layers is essential in truly understanding problems and in developing comprehensive solutions. In this paper we propose a framework that integrates layer specific monitoring and adaptation techniques, and enables multi-layered control loops in service-based systems. The proposed approach is evaluated on a medical imaging procedure for Computed Tomography (CT) Scans, an e-Health scenario characterized by strong dependencies between the software layer and infrastructural resources.

Abstract: After a long period of stagnation, traditionally explained by the voluntary nature of the programme, a considerable increase in routine measles vaccine uptake has been recently observed in Italy after a set of public interventions aiming to promote MMR immunization, whilst retaining its voluntary aspect To account for this take-off in coverage we propose a simple SIR transmission model with vaccination choice, where, unlike similar works, vaccinating behaviour spreads not only through the diffusion of “private” information spontaneously circulating among parents of children to be vaccinated, which we call imitation, but also through public information communicated by the public health authorities We show that public intervention has a stabilising role which is able to reduce the strength of imitation-induced oscillations, to allow disease elimination, and to even make the disease-free equilibrium where everyone is vaccinated globally attractive The available Italian data are used to evaluate the main behavioural parameters, showing that the proposed model seems to provide a much more plausible behavioural explanation of the observed take-off of uptake of vaccine against measles than models based on pure imitation alone

Abstract: The importance of requirements for the whole development flow calls for strong validation techniques based on formal methods. In the case of discrete systems, some approaches based on temporal logic satisfiability are gaining increasing momentum. However, in many real-world domains (e.g. railways signaling), the requirements constrain the temporal evolution of both discrete and continuous variables. These hybrid domains pose substantial problems: on one side, a continuous domain requires very expressive formal languages; on the other side, the resulting expressiveness results in highly intractable problems. In this paper, we address the problem of requirements validation for real-world hybrid domains, and present two main contributions. First, we propose the HRELTL logic, that extends the Linear-time Temporal Logic with Regular Expressions (RELTL) with hybrid aspects. Second, we show that the satisfiability problem for the linear fragment can be reduced to an equi-satisfiable problem for RELTL. This makes it possible to use automatic (albeit incomplete) techniques based on Bounded Model Checking and on Satisfiability Modulo Theory. The choice of the language is inspired by and validated within a project funded by the European Railway Agency, on the formalization and validation of the European Train Control System specifications. The activity showed that most of requirements can be formalized into HRELTL, and an experimental evaluation confirmed the practicality of the analyses.

Abstract: In this chapter, we focus on the automatic recognition of emotional states using acoustic and linguistic parameters as features and classifiers as tools to predict the ‘correct’ emotional states. We first sketch history and state of the art in this field; then we describe the process of ‘corpus engineering’, i.e. the design and the recording of databases, the annotation of emotional states, and further processing such as manual or automatic segmentation. Next, we present an overview of acoustic and linguistic features that are extracted automatically or manually. In the section on classifiers, we deal with topics such as the curse of dimensionality and the sparse data problem, classifiers, and evaluation. At the end of each section, we point out important aspects that should be taken into account for the planning or the assessment of studies. The subject area of this chapter is not emotions in some narrow sense but in a wider sense encompassing emotion-related states such as moods, attitudes, or interpersonal stances as well. We do not aim at an in-depth treatise of some specific aspects or algorithms but at an overview of approaches and strategies that have been used or should be used.
