TL;DR: A sliding mode control algorithm is presented to robustly stabilize a class of underactuated mechanical systems that are not linearly controllable and violate Brockett's necessary condition for smooth asymptotic stabilization of the equilibrium, with parametric uncertainties.
Abstract: In this paper, we present a sliding mode control algorithm to robustly stabilize a class of underactuated mechanical systems that are not linearly controllable and violate Brockett's necessary condition for smooth asymptotic stabilization of the equilibrium, with parametric uncertainties. In defining the class of systems, a few simplifying assumptions are made on the structure of the dynamics; in particular, the damping forces are assumed to be linear in velocities. We first propose a switching surface design for this class of systems, and subsequently, a switched algorithm to reach this surface in finite time using conventional and higher order sliding mode controllers. The stability of the closed-loop system is investigated with an undefined relative degree of the sliding functions. The controller gains are designed such that the controller stabilizes the actual system with parametric uncertainty. The proposed control algorithm is applied to two benchmark problems: a mobile robot and an underactuated underwater vehicle. Simulation results are presented to validate the proposed scheme.

TL;DR: This article proposes an unsupervised learning approach for action primitives that make use of the human movements as well as object state changes, and proposes using parametric hidden Markov models (PHMMs) for representing the discoveredaction primitives.
Abstract: In the area of imitation learning, one of the important research problems is action representation. There has been a growing interest in expressing actions as a combination of meaningful subparts called action primitives. Action primitives could be thought of as elementary building blocks for action representation. In this article, we present a complete concept of learning action primitives to recognize and synthesize actions. One of the main novelties in this work is the detection of primitives in a unified framework, which takes into account objects and actions being applied to them. As the first major contribution, we propose an unsupervised learning approach for action primitives that make use of the human movements as well as object state changes. As the second major contribution, we propose using parametric hidden Markov models (PHMMs) for representing the discovered action primitives. PHMMs represent movement trajectories as a function of their desired effect on the object, and we will discuss 1) how these PHMMs can be trained in an unsupervised manner, 2) how they can be used for synthesizing movements to achieve a desired effect, and 3) how they can be used to recognize an action primitive and the effect from an observed acting human.

TL;DR: In this article, the outcomes of combining thermal spray and high-entropy alloys (HEAs) are discussed, with reference to the requirements of thermal spray processing, and thermal spray methods are contrasted against laser cladding and surface alloying techniques for synthesizing thick HEA coatings.
Abstract: High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are a new generation of materials that exhibit unique characteristics and properties, and are demonstrating potential in the form of thermal spray coatings for demanding environments. The use of HEAs as feedstock for coating processes has advanced due to reports of their exceptional properties in both bulk and coating forms. Emerging reports of thermal sprayed HEA coatings outperforming conventional materials have accelerated further exploration of this field. This early-stage review discusses the outcomes of combining thermal spray and HEAs. Various synthesis routes adopted for HEA feedstock preparation and their properties are discussed, with reference to the requirements of thermal spray processing. The HEA feedstock is then compared and correlated with coating microstructure and phase composition as a function of the thermal spray processing route. Subsequently, the mechanical behavior of thermal spray HEA coatings is summarized in terms of porosity, hardness, and tribological properties, along with their oxidation and electrochemical properties, followed by their potential applications. The thermal spray methods are contrasted against laser cladding and surface alloying techniques for synthesizing thick HEA coatings. Furthermore, HEAs that have displayed excellent properties via alternative processing routes, but have not been explored within the framework of thermal spray, are recommended.

TL;DR: The study highlights the need to critically consider the distinct meteorological processes of west-to-east IGP and changes in dominant sources from post-monsoon to winter in the formulation of future pollution mitigation policies.
Abstract: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5, aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 µm) impacts the climate, reduces visibility and severely influences human health. The Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP), home to about one-seventh of the world's total population and a hotspot of aerosol loading, observes strong enhancements in the PM2.5 concentrations towards winter. We performed high-resolution (12 km × 12 km) atmospheric chemical transport modeling (WRF-Chem) for the post-monsoon to winter transition to unravel the underlying dynamics and influences of regional emissions over the region. Model, capturing the observed variations to an extent, reveals that the spatial distribution of PM2.5 having patches of enhanced concentrations (≥100 µgm-3) during post-monsoon, evolves dramatically into a widespread enhancement across the IGP region during winter. A sensitivity simulation, supported by satellite observations of fires, shows that biomass-burning emissions over the northwest IGP play a crucial role during post-monsoon. Whereas, in contrast, towards winter, a large-scale decline in the air temperature, significantly shallower atmospheric boundary layer, and weaker winds lead to stagnant conditions (ventilation coefficient lower by a factor of ~4) thereby confining the anthropogenic influences closer to the surface. Such changes in the controlling processes from post-monsoon to winter transition profoundly affect the composition of the fine aerosols over the IGP region. The study highlights the need to critically consider the distinct meteorological processes of west-to-east IGP and changes in dominant sources from post-monsoon to winter in the formulation of future pollution mitigation policies.
