TL;DR: In this paper, a dual-frequency coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed monopole antenna is proposed and experimentally studied, which utilizes the advantages of the CPW line to simplify the structure of the antenna into a single metallic level, thereby making easier the integration with the microwave integrated circuits.
Abstract: A new dual-frequency design of coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed monopole antenna is proposed and experimentally studied. The proposed antenna utilizes the advantages of the CPW line to simplify the structure of the antenna into a single metallic level, thereby making easier the integration with the microwave integrated circuits. The two operating modes of the proposed antenna are associated with various lengths of two monopoles, in which the longer monopole works for the first resonant mode and the shorter monopole works for the second mode. Moreover, by increasing the width of the longer monopole, a broadband dual-frequency operation is demonstrated. Experimental results show that the impedance bandwidth, determined from 10-dB return loss, of the two operating frequencies can both be greater than 14%. Details of the experimental results are presented and discussed.

TL;DR: Six cases of a distinctive soft tissue tumor which occurred in five women and one man are presented, interpreting the lesions as hybrid tumors with features of schwannoma and retiform perineurioma.
Abstract: We present six cases of a distinctive soft tissue tumor which occurred in five women and one man. None of the patients had signs of neurofibromatosis. All tumors occurred on the fingers (n=5) or the thenar eminence of the hand (n=1). The mean age of the patients was 33 years. The tumors were 1–2.5 cm in diameter (mean size 1.6 cm). Three patients with follow-up were without signs of recurrence or metastasis. Microscopically the lesions were nonencapsulated and featured a multilobular architecture and both myxoid and pseudocystic change. The lobules varied in size and shape and were separated by variably thickened, dense, sclerotic/collagenous septae. The lobules were composed of two components: schwannomatous and perineuriomatous. The schwannomatous component was immunohistochemically S-100 protein positive and CD34 and EMA negative, and the perineuriomatous component had the appearance of retiform perineurioma. The perineurial parts were mostly S-100 protein and CD34 negative and EMA positive. These two components either formed separate nodules or the schwannomatous tissue surrounded the perineurial parts located in the centers of the lobules. We interpreted the lesions as hybrid tumors with features of schwannoma and retiform perineurioma.

TL;DR: The present study suggests the potential clinical importance of carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine in the treatment of inflammatory pain, and indicates that, in a paw inflammatory hyperalgesia in rats, the antinociceptive effects of both drugs are, at least partially, mediated by adenosine A1 receptors.
Abstract: The antinociceptive effects of carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine, and the influence of caffeine, were examined in a paw pressure test in rats. Carbamazepine (10-40 mg/kg; intraperitoneal, i.p.) and oxcarbazepine (40-160 mg/kg; i.p.) caused a significant dose-dependent reduction of the paw inflammatory hyperalgesia induced by concanavalin A (Con A), intraplantarly (i.p1.). A comparable pattern of antinociceptive effect of carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine was observed; the only difference is their potency, in that carbamazepine was about three times more potent than oxcarbazepine. Caffeine (5-20mg/kg; i.p.), a non-selective adenosine receptor antagonist, significantly depressed the antinociceptive effects of carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine, in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Also, a significant depression of the antinociceptive effects of carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine was observed by pretreatment with 1,3-dipropyl-8-cyclopentylxantine (DPCPX, 0.4 and 0.8 mg/kg; i.p.), an adenosine A(1) receptor antagonist. These findings indicate that, in a paw inflammatory hyperalgesia in rats, the antinociceptive effects of both drugs are, at least partially, mediated by adenosine A(1) receptors. In conclusion, the present study suggests the potential clinical importance of carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine in the treatment of inflammatory pain. In addition, caffeine consumption could possibly depress the analgesic effects of both anticonvulsive drugs.

TL;DR: In this paper, a broadband low-profile printed T-shaped monopole antenna is presented, where the central arm is short-circuited to the ground plane to achieve improved impedance matching over a wide frequency range.
Abstract: A broadband low-profile printed T-shaped monopole antenna is presented. It is demonstrated that, by short-circuiting the central arm of a low-profile T-shaped monopole to the ground plane, much improved impedance matching over a wide frequency range can be achieved. A constructed prototype showing a low profile of only 3 mm and a wide bandwidth larger than 1.1 GHz covering the 5.2/5.8-GHz WLAN bands is presented. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. TL;DR: There is no single broad-spectrum oxime suitable for the treatment of poisoning with all highly toxic organophosphorus agents, as confirmed in this investigation of AChE reactivators.
Abstract: We investigated the relationship between the chemical structure of acetylcholinesterase (AChE; EC 3.1.1.7) reactivators and their potency in reactivating this enzyme, after prior inhibition by VX (O-ethyl-S-(2-diisopropylaminoethyl)-methylthiophosphonate), tabun, sarin, and cyclosarin. The oximes, pralidoxime (2-PAM), HI-6 [1-(2-hydroxyiminomethylpyridinium)-3-(4-carbamoylpyridinium)-2-oxa-propane dichloride], obidoxime and HS-6 [1-(2-hydroxyiminomethylpyridinium)-3-(3-carbamoylpyridinium)-2-oxa-propane dichloride] were used as representatives of the group of AChE reactivators. Rat brain AChE was used as the appropriate source of the enzyme. Our results confirm that there is no single broad-spectrum oxime suitable for the treatment of poisoning with all highly toxic organophosphorus agents.

Abstract: This paper presents a study of an ultra-wideband (UWB) metal-plate monopole antenna applied to a laptop for wireless communications. The UWB antenna in this study is a metal-plate monopole of an inverted-L shape mounted at the top edge of the supporting metal frame for the laptop display. The UWB antenna shows an operating bandwidth of about 4.5 GHz (1890–6450 MHz), so that it easily cover the UMTS band (1920–2170 MHz) for mobile communication and the 2.4-GHz (2400–2484 MHz) and 5.2/5.8-GHz (5150–5350/5725–5875 MHz) bands for WLAN communication. That is, the UWB antenna studied is suitable for application in a laptop capable of UMTS/WLAN dual-mode operation for wireless Internet access. The radiation characteristics for frequencies across the UMTS and WLAN bands are also presented. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. TL;DR: Reactivator K048 seems to be promising reactivator of tabun-inhibited AChE, whose reactivation potency is significantly higher than the efficacy of HI-6 and pralidoxime, and comparable with the potency of the obidoxime at human relevant doses.
Abstract: Four new AChE oximes for reactivation of acetylcholinesterase inhibited with tabun - K027 [1-(4-hydroxyiminomethylpyridinium)-3-(4-carbamoylpyridinium) propane dibromide], K005 [1,3-bis(2-hydroxyiminomethylpyridinium) propane dibromide], K033 [1,4-bis(2-hydroxyiminomethylpyridinium) butane dibromide] and K048 [1-(4-hydroxyiminomethylpyridinium)-4-(4-carbamoylpyridinium) butane dibromide] were prepared. Their efficacies to reactivate tabun-inhibited acetylcholinesterase were studied and compared with the currently used acetylcholinesterase reactivators (pralidoxime, obidoxime and HI-6). Reactivator K048 seems to be promising reactivator of tabun-inhibited AChE. Its reactivation potency is significantly higher than the efficacy of HI-6 and pralidoxime, and comparable with the potency of the obidoxime at human relevant doses.

Abstract: A new narrow-patch microstrip antenna with high radiation performance is presented. By using a feeding structure composed of a step-shaped feeding strip in the air substrate and a coplanar strip in the narrow radiating patch, the proposed antenna shows high gain (about 8.3–9.2 dBi), wide azimuthal radiation pattern (3-dB beamwidth close to 90°), and reduced cross-polarization radiation (less than −20 dB) for frequencies across the 2.4-GHz (2400–2484 MHz) WLAN band. Experimental results of a constructed prototype suitable for application in the 2.4-GHz WLAN access point are presented and discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. TL;DR: This study provides the first analysis of the allele frequency distribution of the ALAD gene in a Turkish population and the results are compared with other world populations.
Abstract: delta-Aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) is a cytosolic enzyme in the heme biosynthetic pathway. ALAD is a polymorphic enzyme showing marked ethnic group differences. In this study, ALAD polymorphism is studied in a Turkish population. Genomic DNA extracted from 230 individuals and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) coupled with the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) technique were used to identify variants. The frequencies of the alleles ALAD1 and ALAD2 in Turkey were 0.887 and 0.113, respectively. This study provides the first analysis of the allele frequency distribution of the ALAD gene in a Turkish population. The results are compared with other world populations.

TL;DR: In this article, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been used as a tool to investigate spectral differences of bacterial endospores, and the key aspects of this work include discerning what architectural pattern provides the largest enhancement and reproducibility when sampling the spore coat and whether some method of immobilization, or attraction, of the spores to the surface is necessary.
Abstract: Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been used as a tool to investigate spectral differences of bacterial endospores. Ultimately, this method could be used as a smart and rapid on-site detector for biological warfare agents. However, due to the spectral complexity and the relative size of spores to the substrate features, a rigidly defined substrate is necessary for reproducible characterization. We are investigating many of the reported substrate classes such as: Nano-sphere lithography (NSL), Film over nano-sphere (FONS), nano-shells, electrochemically roughened metals, and dispersed and immobilized colloids. The key aspects of this work include discerning what architectural pattern provides the largest enhancement and reproducibility when sampling the spore coat and whether some method of immobilization, or attraction, of the spores to the surface is necessary. We will present preliminary results of bacterial spore identification as well as a comparison of the substrates studied.

TL;DR: In this article, the Griffiths formalism for constrained variational problems was used to extend the results of Khaneja, Brockett and Glaser for two-spin and three-spin NMR systems.
Abstract: Recent papers by Khaneja, Brockett and Glaser obtained efficient RF pulse trains for two-spin and three-spin NMR systems by finding sub-Riemannian geodesics on a quotient space of SU(4). This paper outlines a method for extending their results via the Griffiths formalism for constrained variational problems.
