TL;DR: It is proposed that the stylohyal bone is used for heterodyne detection of Doppler-shifted echoes and would allow very precise frequency resolution and phase-sensitive analysis of the returning echoes for determining the velocity of echolocated objects like insects.
Abstract: Arising from: N. Veselka et al. , 939–942 (2010)10.1038/nature08737

Echolocation of bats is a fascinating topic with an ongoing controversy regarding the signal processing that bats perform on the echo. Veselka et al.1 found that bats that use the larynx for producing the echolocating ultrasound have a stylohyal bone that connects the larynx to the auditory bulla. I propose that the stylohyal bone is used for heterodyne detection of Doppler-shifted echoes. This would allow very precise frequency resolution and phase-sensitive analysis of the returning echoes for determining the velocity of echolocated objects like insects.

21 Mar 2011TL;DR: This paper introduces a faster adaptive algorithm that no longer uses time factors nor requires a full system-wide synchronization but still meets the conditions of the ordering of events in a distributed system.
Abstract: The coupling of real implementations with simulations helps the developer to better understand the behavior of the real system by shifting to the simulation the parts of the overall system that he cannot influence. This was done for MPI programs in MPI-NeTSim. where the network and transport protocol are simulated in OMNeT++ but the original MPI code executes unchanged. We previously developed a static time factoring algorithm to accurately handle the discrepancies between the wall clock time of the application and the virtual simulation time. However, the original algorithm proved to be too slow for simulations with a higher number of hosts and a greater amount of data. In this paper, we introduce a faster adaptive algorithm that no longer uses time factors nor requires a full system-wide synchronization but still meets the conditions of the ordering of events in a distributed system. The new algorithm scales to significantly more hosts and data.

TL;DR: In this paper, an integrative summary of the previous researches is developed in order to identify the main dimensions of an innovation orientated culture, and a systematical approach provides a framework for further analysis and exploration of a culture of innovation.
Abstract: An innovation orientated corporate culture is often seen as a driving force for the development and implementation of innovative products and processes. In the theoretical discussion concerning the culture of innovation phenomena a general accepted definition and a clear understanding concerning the content of such a culture seems not to exist. From analyzing conceptual papers and empirical studies, an integrative summary of the previous researches is developed in order to identify the main dimensions of an innovation orientated culture. This systematical approach provides a framework for further analysis and exploration of a culture of innovation.
