TL;DR: The 153109 of the IL27 gene may be associated with the susceptibility to CHD, including atrial sePTal defect and ventricular septal defect, according to a Chinese population using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay.
Abstract: Background IL-27, a member of the IL-12 family, has been involved in maternal tolerance to the foetus and successful pregnancy. Growing evidences indicate that IL-27 plays a crucial role in pregnancy. Aim We carried out the present study in order to investigate whether polymorphisms in the IL27 are associated with the risk for CHDs, including atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect. Patients and methods We conducted this case–control study among 247 atrial septal defect patients, 150 ventricular septal defect patients, and 368 healthy controls in a Chinese population using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. Results Significantly increased risk for atrial septal defect (p=0.001, OR=1.490, 95% CI=1.178–1.887) and ventricular septal defect (p=0.004, OR=1.502, 95% CI=1.139–1.976) was observed to be associated with the allele G of rs153109. In a dominant model, we have also observed that increased susceptibilities for atrial septal defect (p<0.01, OR=1.89, 95% CI=1.35–2.63) and ventricular septal defect (p<0.01, OR=2.50, 95% CI=1.67–3.85) were statistically associated with rs153109; however, no association was found between CHD risk and rs17855750 in the IL27 gene. Conclusion The 153109 of the IL27 gene may be associated with the susceptibility to CHD, including atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect.

TL;DR: Public health concern caused by the reassortant H11N9 viruses should be emphasized during the future surveillance, as these viruses showed low pathogenicity to chickens in the IVPI test.
Abstract: Avian influenza viruses have caused human infection and posed the pandemic potential. Live poultry markets are considered as a source of human infection with avian influenza viruses. Avian influenza routine surveillance of live poultry markets is taken annually in China. We isolated the 2 H11N9 influenza virus from the surveillance program. To better understand the risk caused by these new viruses, we characterize the genetic and pathogenicity of the two viruses. Viral isolation was conducted with specific pathogen-free (SPF) embryonated chicken eggs. Whole genome was sequenced, and phylogenetic analysis was conducted. Two H11N9 viruses were identified, with all 8 segments belonging to the Eurasian lineage. The HA, NA, M, NS and PA genes were similar to virus isolates from ducks, and the NP, PB2 and PB1 gene segments were most similar to those viruses from wild birds, indicating that the H11N9 viruses might represent reassortant viruses from poultry and wild birds. The HA receptor binding preference was avian-like, and the cleavage site sequence of HA showed low pathogenic. The NA gene showed 94.6 % identity with the novel H7N9 virus that emerged in 2013. There was no drug resistance mutation in the M2 protein. The Asn30Asp and Thr215Ala substitutions in the M1 protein implied a potentially increased pathogenicity in mice. Both viruses were low-pathogenic strains, as assessed by the standards of intravenous pathogenicity index (IVPI) tests. Two reassortant H11N9 avian influenza viruses were detected. These viruses showed low pathogenicity to chickens in the IVPI test. Public health concern caused by the reassortant H11N9 viruses should be emphasized during the future surveillance.

TL;DR: China has dealt with many public health emergencies successfully, ensuring that its core public health capacity has met the IHR requirements, which was reported to WHO in June 2014.
Abstract: As an international legal instrument, the International Health Regulations (IHR) is internationally binding in 196 countries, especially in all the member states of the World Health Organization (WHO). The IHR aims to prevent, protect against, control, and respond to the international spread of disease and aims to cut out unnecessary interruptions to traffic and trade. To meet IHR requirements, countries need to improve capacity construction by developing, strengthening, and maintaining core response capacities for public health risk and Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). In addition, all the related core capacity requirements should be met before June 15, 2012. If not, then the deadline can be extended until 2016 upon request by countries. China has promoted the implementation of the IHR comprehensively, continuingly strengthening the core public health capacity and advancing in core public health emergency capacity building, points of entry capacity building, as well as risk prevention and control of biological events (infectious diseases, zoonotic diseases, and food safety), radiological, nuclear, and chemical events, and other catastrophic events. With significant progress in core capacity building, China has dealt with many public health emergencies successfully, ensuring that its core public health capacity has met the IHR requirements, which was reported to WHO in June 2014. This article describes the steps, measures, and related experiences in the implementation of IHR in China.
