TL;DR: The prevalence of CH remains high in this population which has a high prevalence of neural tube defects, and the prevalence rates of total and isolated CH showed a similar downward trend during the 11–year period.
Abstract: Congenital hydrocephalus (CH) was a major birth defect of the central nervous system besides neural tube defects (NTDs). Few studies have focused on both the prevalence and trend of isolated and complicated CH in China. Data were drawn from a population-based birth defects surveillance program in five rural counties in northern China from 2005 to 2015. All livebirths and pregnancy terminations at any gestational age affected with CH were recorded. The prevalence and trend of isolated and complicated CH were examined. During the 11-year period, a total of 176,223 births and 357 CH cases were recorded, resulting in a prevalence rate of 20.3 CH cases per 10,000 births. Of the CH cases, 146 were isolated CH, resulting in a prevalence rate of 8.3 per 10,000 births. The pre-perinatal prevalence (<28 gestational weeks) was higher than the perinatal prevalence for both isolated and total CH. The prevalence rates of total and isolated CH showed a similar downward trend during the 11–year period. This downward trend was statistically significant after 2009 (p < 0.05), when a massive folic acid supplementation program was introduced. Although it decreased over time, the prevalence of CH remains high in this population which has a high prevalence of neural tube defects.

Abstract: Objective: To analyze the prognostic effects of age in different tumor types and determine the prognostic significance of age related genes in patients with lower grade glioma (LGG). Methods: The relationships between age and tumor overall survival were determined by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset. The age related genes were identified using TCGA RNA-seq data. Univariate and multivariate cox regression were used to determine the prognostic significance of age related genes. The results derived from TCGA dataset were further validated using Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) datasets. Results: Age at initial pathologic diagnosis was most associated with the overall survival of LGG patients than other types of tumor patients. Age related genes EMP3, IGFBP2, TIMP1 and SERPINE1 were highly expressed in old LGG patients. The hypo-methylations of EMP3 and SERPINE1 were contributing to the high expressions of EMP3 and SERPINE1 in old LGG patients. Also, EMP3, IGFBP2, TIMP1 and SERPINE1 were highly expressed in LGG tumor tissues, compared with normal brain tissues. Moreover, high expressions of IGFBP2, EMP3, TIMP1 and SERPINE1 were associated with the worse prognosis of LGG patients. Furthermore, we demonstrated that EMP3 and SERPINE1 were connected with each other and the combination of EMP3 and SERPINE1 had better prognostic effects in glioma patients. Conclusions: Age related genes IGFBP2, EMP3, TIMP1 and SERPINE1 have significant prognostic effects in LGG patients.

TL;DR: Results showed that level of EMP was significantly higher in the intermediate lesion group, and no correlation was found between EMP and FFR value, suggesting that circulating EMP is a systemic marker rather than a focal one.
Abstract: Endothelial microparticle (EMP) is a biomarker for endothelial dysfunction. The aim of this study is to investigate the utility of EMP in evaluating coronary intermediate lesions. Participants included 49 patients with coronary intermediate lesions and 24 subjects with normal coronary arteries. Among these subjects, 28 patients accepted fractional flow reserve (FFR). Results showed that level of EMP was significantly higher in the intermediate lesion group. No correlation was found between EMP and FFR value, suggesting that circulating EMP is a systemic marker rather than a focal one.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review studies relevant to schistosomiasis modelling in a Chinese surveillance-response system with the expectation to achieve a practically useful understanding of the current situation and potential future study directions.
Abstract: With the goal set to eliminate schistosomiasis nationwide by 2020, The People's Republic of China has initiated the surveillance-response stage to identify remaining sources of infection and potential pockets from where the disease could reemerge. Shifting the focus from classical monitoring and evaluation to rapid detection and immediate response, this approach requires modelling to bridge the surveillance and response components. We review here studies relevant to schistosomiasis modelling in a Chinese surveillance-response system with the expectation to achieve a practically useful understanding of the current situation and potential future study directions. We also present useful experience that could tentatively be applied in other endemic regions in the world. Modelling is discussed at length as it plays an essential role, both with regard to the intermediate snail host and in the definitive, mammal hosts. Research gaps with respect to snail infection, animal hosts and sectoral research cooperation are identified and examined against the prevailing background of ecosystem and socioeconomic changes with a focus on coexisting challenges and opportunities in a situation with increasing financial constraints.
