TL;DR: It is suggested that determination of erythrocyte polyamines in leukemia patients may be helpful in diagnosis, differential diagnosis and prognosis.
Abstract: In a study on erythrocyte polyamine levels in 20 leukemia patients and 18 healthy individuals, following results were obtained. Putrescine(Pu) in erythrocytes was nearly undetectable but in 2 AMoL patients; Spermidine(Spd) level in ALL was higher than the control volue (P 0.1), while that in AMoL and AMMoL was considerably lower as compared to control (P<0.001); Spermine (Spm) level in all types of leukemia was increased (P<0.001); Spd/Spm ratio was significantly decreased, showing 1.525 in control group, 0.938 in ALL (P<0.025), 0.779 in AML (M1, M2)P<0.01), 0.319 in APL (P<0.001) and 0.296 in AMoL & AMMoL (P<0.001), and the differences between the Spd/Spm ratio in AMoL and AMMoL and in ALL were noted (P<0.05). These results suggested that determination of erythrocyte polyamines in leukemia patients may be helpful in diagnosis, differential diagnosis and prognosis.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors summarized the major and recent findings focusing on the mechanisms of MIF modulating functions in brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases, which may provide important therapeutic targets meriting further investigation.
Abstract: Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is involved in various immune-mediated pathologies and regulates both innate and adaptive immune reactions, thus being related to several acute and chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, septic shock, and atherosclerosis. Its role in acute and chronic brain pathologies, such as stroke and neurodegenerative diseases, has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In response to stimuli like hypoxia, inflammation or infection, different cell types can rapidly release MIF, including immune cells, endothelial cells, and neuron cells. Notably, clinical data from past decades also suggested a possible link between serum MIF levels and the severity of stroke and the evolving of neurodegenerative diseases. In this review, we summarize the major and recent findings focusing on the mechanisms of MIF modulating functions in brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases, which may provide important therapeutic targets meriting further investigation.

25 Jul 2005TL;DR: The technique of treatment of urethra cauncle with Ho:YAG laser is an effect and safe therapeutics with the merit of excellent homeostasis, improved visualization, minimal thermal damage to surrounding tissue, shorter period of recovery and easy to operate.
Abstract: Objective: To observe the effect of Ho:YAG laser in treatment of urethra cauncle. Methods: The patients suffering from urethra cauncle were treated by Ho:YAG laser, the energy of per pulse is 0.5J. The frequency of pulse is 5~15Hz, and the average power of the laser is 2.5~7.5W. Results: Among the patients 188 cases of urethra cauncle were only cured for one time, twice for 12 cases. No stricture on the peristome of urethra or urethrovaginal fistula was observed. Conclusions: The technique of treatment of urethra cauncle with Ho:YAG laser is an effect and safe therapeutics with the merit of excellent homeostasis, improved visualization, minimal thermal damage to surrounding tissue, shorter period of recovery and easy to operate. It is better than CO 2 laser and Nd:YAG laser.
