Abstract: Background The prevalence of obesity and overweight is increasing worldwide. Obesity in children impacts on their health in both short- and long-term. Obesity prevention strategies are poorly understood. Objective To assess the effectiveness of interventions designed to prevent obesity in childhood. Search strategy Electronic databases were searched from January 1985 to October 1999. Selection criteria Data from randomized control trials and non-randomized trials with concurrent control group were included. A priori, studies with follow up of 1 year minimum were selected however, this was subsequently amended to include studies with a minimum follow up of three months. Data collection & analysis Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed study quality. Main results Seven studies were included, three long-term (>1 years) and four short-term (>3 months and Conclusions Two of the long-term studies (one focused on dietary education and physical activity vs. control, and the other only on dietary education vs. control), resulted in a reduction in the prevalence on obesity, but the third, which focused on dietary education and physical activity, found no effect. Of the four short-term studies, three focused simply on physical activity/reduction of sedentary behavious vs. control. Two of these studies resulted in a reduction in the prevalence of obesity in intervention groups compared with control groups, and another study found a non-significant reduction. The fourth study focused on dietary education and physical activity, and did not find an effect on obesity, but did report a reduction in fat intake. Overall, the findings of the review suggest that currently there is limited quality data on the effectiveness of obesity prevention programmes and as such no generalizable conclusions can be drawn. The need for well-designed studies that examine a range of interventions remains a priority.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify indicators of non-functional overreaching (NFOR) in team sport athletes undertaking intensive training loads. Eighteen semi-professional rugby league players were randomly assigned into two pair matched groups. One group completed 6 weeks of normal training (NT) whilst the other group was deliberately overreached through intensified training (IT). Both groups then completed the same 7-day stepwise training load reduction taper. Multistage fitness test (MSFT) performance, $$ \ifmmode\expandafter\dot\else\expandafter\.\fi{V}{\text{O}}_{{2\max }} $$ , peak aerobic running velocity (V max), maximal heart rate, vertical jump, 10-s cycle sprint performance and body mass were measured pre- and post-training period and following the taper. Hormonal, haematological and immunological parameters were also measured pre-training and following weeks 2, 4 and 6 of training and post-taper. MANOVA for repeated measures with contrast analysis indicated that MSFT performance and $$ \ifmmode\expandafter\dot\else\expandafter\.\fi{V}{\text{O}}_{{2\max }} $$ were significantly reduced in the IT group over time and condition, indicating that a state of overreaching was attained. However, the only biochemical measure that was significantly different between the IT and NT group was the glutamine to glutamate (Gln/Glu) ratio even though testosterone, testosterone to cortisol (T/C) ratio, plasma glutamate, and CK activity were significantly changed after training in both groups. Positive endurance and power performance changes were observed post-taper in the IT group confirming NFOR. These changes were associated with increases in the T/C ratio and the Gln/Glu ratio and decreases in plasma glutamate and CK activity. These results indicate that although there was no single reliable biochemical marker of NFOR in these athletes, the Gln/Glu ratio and MSFT test may be useful measures for monitoring responses to IT in team sport athletes.

Abstract: We report an integrated photon pair source based on a CMOS-compatible microring resonator that generates multiple, simultaneous, and independent photon pairs at different wavelengths in a frequency comb compatible with fiber communication wavelength division multiplexing channels (200 GHz channel separation) and with a linewidth that is compatible with quantum memories (110 MHz). It operates in a self-locked pump configuration, avoiding the need for active stabilization, making it extremely robust even at very low power levels.

Abstract: Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a photoluminescence (PL) material with unique properties. The recent demonstration of its PL, controlled by the intercalation of positive ions, can lead to many opportunities for employing this quasi-2D material in ion-related biological applications. Here, we present two representative models of biological systems that incorporate the ion-controlled PL of quasi-2D MoS2 nanoflakes. The ion exchange behaviors of these two models are investigated to reveal enzymatic activities and cell viabilities. While the ion intercalation of MoS2 in enzymatic activities is enabled via an external applied voltage, the intercalation of ions in cell viability investigations occurs in the presence of the intrinsic cell membrane potential.
