Abstract: BACKGROUND: There is a general view that electronic gaming is the most 'addictive' form of gambling, in that it contributes more to causing problem gambling than any other gambling activity. As such, electronic gaming machines have been referred to as the 'crack-cocaine' of gambling. While this analogy has popular appeal, it is only recently that the scientific community has begun to investigate its validity. In line with the belief that electronic gambling has a higher 'addictive' potential than other forms of gambling, research has also begun to focus on identifying the characteristics of gaming machines that may be associated with problem gambling behaviour. AIMS AND METHODS: Aims and methods This paper will review the different types of modern electronic gaming machines, and will use the introduction of gaming machines to Australia to examine the association between electronic gaming and problem gambling, with particular reference to the characteristics of modern electronic gaming machines. FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS: Despite overwhelming acceptance that gaming machines are associated with the highest level of problem gambling, the empirical literature provides inconclusive evidence to support the analogy likening electronic gaming to 'crack-cocaine'. Rigorous and systematic evaluation is required to establish definitively the absolute 'addictive' potential of gaming machines and the degree to which machine characteristics influence the development and maintenance of problem gambling behaviour.

Abstract: IL-17A is originally identified as a proinflammatory cytokine that induces neutrophils. Although IL-17A production by CD4+ Th17 T cells is well documented, it is not clear whether IL-17A is produced and participates in the innate immune response against infections. In the present report, we demonstrate that IL-17A is expressed in the liver of mice infected with Listeria monocytogenes from an early stage of infection. IL-17A is important in protective immunity at an early stage of listerial infection in the liver because IL-17A-deficient mice showed aggravation of the protective response. The major IL-17A-producing cells at the early stage were TCR γδ T cells expressing TCR Vγ4 or Vγ6. Interestingly, TCR γδ T cells expressing both IFN-γ and IL-17A were hardly detected, indicating that the IL-17A-producing TCR γδ T cells are distinct from IFN-γ-producing γδ T cells, similar to the distinction between Th17 and Th1 in CD4+ T cells. All the results suggest that IL-17A is a newly discovered effector molecule produced by TCR γδ T cells, which is important in innate immunity in the liver.

Abstract: Optical filters are essential in a wide range of applications, including optical communications, electronics, lighting, optical sensors and photography. This article presents recent work which indicates that optical filters can be created from specialized nanoparticle suspensions. Specifically, this article describes a theoretical optimization process for designing nanofluid-based filters for hybrid solar photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) applications. This particular application is suitable because nanofluids can be utilized as both volumetric solar absorbers and flowing heat transfer mediums. The nanofluid filters described in this work compare favorably with conventional optical filters for five photovoltaic (PV) cell alternatives: InGaP, CdTe, InGaAs, Si, and Ge. This study demonstrates that nanofluids make efficient, compact and potentially low-cost, spectrally selective optical filters.
