Abstract: The polarimetric backscattering coefficients (vv-, hh-, hv-, and vh-polarizations) of a flooded rice field are measured using L- and C-band ground-based polarimetric scatterometers. These measurements were made during the rice growth cycle, i.e., from the transplanting period to the harvest period (May to October 2006), to understand the feasibility of modeling and estimating rice growth. We also collected ground truth data that include fresh and dry biomasses, plant height, leaf area index, and leaf size. To study the incidence angle effect, the scatterometer data were collected at four different incidence angles, i.e., 30deg , 40deg, 50deg, and 60deg. In this paper, we show that the backscattering coefficients of a rice field can accurately be modeled using the radiative transfer theory. We also demonstrate that a polarimetric scatterometer is an effective tool for estimating rice growth. The hh-polarized backscattering coefficient is more sensitive to rice growth than its vv-polarization counterpart. The polarimetric ratio can be used to estimate rice growth accurately.

Abstract: Waterlogging stress caused a decrease of leaf chlorophyll content and premature leaf senescence, which are associated with dramatic changes in gene expression profiles in the aerial leaves of root-waterlogged rape seedlings. Soil waterlogging is a serious constraint to crop production. We investigated the physiological responses of rape (Brassica napus L.) seedlings to waterlogging stress and analyzed global gene transcription responses in the aerial leaves of waterlogged rape seedlings. Seedlings of ‘Tammi’ and ‘Youngsan’ cultivars were subjected to waterlogging for 3 and 6 days and recovery for 5 days. Waterlogging stress caused a significant decrease in leaf chlorophyll content and premature senescence of the leaves. Maximal quantum efficiency of PSII (F v/F m) decreased in the waterlogged seedlings compared with the control plants. To evaluate whether the observed physiological changes in the leaves are associated with the differential regulation of gene expression in response to waterlogging stress, we analyzed the global transcriptional profile of leaves of ‘Tammi’ seedlings that were exposed to waterlogging for a short period (36 and 72 h). SolexaQA RNA-seq analysis revealed that a total of 4,484 contigs (8.5 %) of all contigs assayed (52,747) showed a twofold change in expression after 36 h of the start of waterlogging and 9,659 contigs (18.3 %) showed a twofold change after 72 h. Major genes involved in leaf photosynthesis, including light reactions and carbon-fixing reactions, were downregulated, while a number of genes involved in the scavenging of reactive oxygen species, degradation (proteins, starch, and lipids), premature senescence, and abiotic stress tolerance were upregulated. Transcriptome analysis data suggested that the aerial leaves of waterlogged rape seedlings respond to hypoxia by regulating the expression of diverse genes in the leaves.

Abstract: The reuse of waste materials as soil additives could be a welcome development in soil remediation. The mobility of Cd, Pb and As in a contaminated soil was investigated using natural and calcined poultry wastes (eggshell and chicken bone), CaCO3 and CaO at different application rates (0, 1, 3 and 5 %). The chemical composition accompanied with mineralogical composition indicated that CaCO3 and CaO were the major components in natural and calcined eggshells, respectively, while hydroxyapatite (HAP) dominated the natural and calcined chicken bones. The results showed that soil pH tended to increase in response to increasing application rates of all soil additives. The effectiveness of the additives in reducing Cd, Pb and As mobility was assessed by means of chemical extractions with 0.1 N HCl for Cd and Pb or 1 N HCl for As, according to Korean Standard Test (KST) method. Both calcined eggshell and chicken bone were equally effective with CaO or CaCO3 in reducing the concentration of 0.1 N HCl-extractable Cd from 6.17 mg kg−1 to below warning level of 1.5 mg kg−1, especially at the highest application rate. The application of calcined eggshell, CaO and CaCO3 also decreased the concentration of 0.1 N HCl-extractable Pb from 1,012 mg kg−1 to below warning level of 100 mg kg−1. The Pb concentration decreased significantly with an increasing application rate of chicken bone, but remained above warning level even at the highest application rate. On the contrary, natural and calcined chicken bones led to a significant increase in the mobility of As when compared with the control soil. These findings illustrate that calcined eggshell in particular is equally effective as pure chemical additives in stabilizing Cd and Pb in a contaminated agricultural soil. The presence of As in metal-contaminated soils should be taken into consideration when applying phosphate-containing materials as soil additives, because phosphate can compete with arsenate on adsorption sites and result in As mobilization.

Abstract: Plant defensins are small (5-10 kDa) basic peptides thought to be an important component of the defense pathway against fungal and/or bacterial pathogens. To understand the role of plant defensins in protecting plants against the brown planthopper, a type of insect herbivore, we isolated the Brassica rapa Defensin 1 (BrD1) gene and introduced it into rice (Oryza sativa L.) to produce stable transgenic plants. The BrD1 protein is homologous to other plant defensins and contains both an N-terminal endoplasmic reticulum signal sequence and a defensin domain, which are highly conserved in all plant defensins. Based on a phylogenetic analysis of the defensin domain of various plant defensins, we established that BrD1 belongs to a distinct subgroup of plant defensins. Relative to the wild type, transgenic rices expressing BrD1 exhibit strong resistance to brown planthopper nymphs and female adults. These results suggest that BrD1 exhibits insecticidal activity, and might be useful for developing cereal crop plants resistant to sap-sucking insects, such as the brown planthopper.
