Abstract: Using QTL analysis and fine mapping, the novel recessive gene xa44(t) conferring resistance to BB was identified and the expression level of the gene was confirmed through qRT-PCR analysis. Bacterial blight (BB) disease caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is a major factor causing rice yield loss in most rice-cultivating countries, especially in Asia. The deployment of cultivars with resistance to BB is the most effective method to control the disease. However, the evolution of new Xoo or pathotypes altered by single-gene-dependent mutations often results in breakdown of resistance. Thus, efforts to identify novel R-genes with sustainable BB resistance are urgently needed. In this study, we identified three quantitative trait loci (QTLs) on chromosomes 1, 4, and 11, from an F2 population of 493 individuals derived from a cross between IR73571-3B-11-3-K3 and Ilpum using a 7K SNP chip. Of these QTLs, one major QTL, qBB_11, on chromosome 11 explained 61.58% of the total phenotypic variance in the population, with an LOD value of 113.59, based on SNPs 11964077 and 11985463. The single major R-gene, with recessive gene action, was designated xa44(t) and was narrowed down to a 120-kb segment flanked within 28.00 Mbp to 28.12 Mbp. Of nine ORFs present in the target region, two ORFs revealed significantly different expression levels of the candidate genes. These candidate genes (Os11g0690066 and Os11g0690466) are described as “serine/threonine protein kinase domain containing protein” and “hypothetical protein,” respectively. The results will be useful to further understand BB resistance mechanisms and provide new sources of resistance, together with DNA markers for MAS breeding to improve BB resistance in rice.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to characterize the heavy metal phytoremediation potential of Miscanthus sp. Goedae-Uksae 1, a hybrid, perennial, bio-energy crop developed in South Korea. Six different metals (As, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cd, and Zn) were used for the study. The hybrid grass effectively absorbed all the metals from contaminated soil. The maximum removal was observed for As (97.7%), and minimum removal was observed for Zn (42.9%). Similarly, Goedae-Uksae 1 absorbed all the metals from contaminated water except As. Cd, Pb, and Zn were completely (100%) removed from contaminated water samples. Generally, the concentration of metals in roots was several folds higher than in shoots. Initial concentration of metals highly influenced the phytoremediation rate. The results of the bioconcentration factor, translocation factor, and enrichment coefficient tests indicate that Goedae-Uksae 1 could be used for phytoremediation in a marginally contaminated ecosystem.

Abstract: The influence of bran particle size on bread-baking quality of whole grain wheat flour (WWF) and starch retrogradation was studied. Higher water absorption of dough prepared from WWF with added gluten to attain 18% protein was observed for WWFs of fine bran than those of coarse bran, whereas no significant difference in dough mixing time was detected for WWFs of varying bran particle size. The effects of bran particle size on loaf volume of WWF bread and crumb firmness during storage were more evident in hard white wheat than in hard red wheat. A greater degree of starch retrogradation in bread crumb stored for seven days at 4°C was observed in WWFs of fine bran than those of coarse bran. The gels prepared from starch–fine bran blends were harder than those prepared from starch–unground bran blends when stored for one and seven days at 4°C. Abstract: Three hydroponic systems (aeroponics, aerohydroponics, and deep-water culture) were compared for the production of potato (Solanum tuberosum) seed tubers. Aerohydroponics was designed to improve the root zone environment of aeroponics by maintaining root contact with nutrient solution in the lower part of the beds, while intermittently spraying roots in the upper part. Root vitality, shoot fresh and dry weight, and total leaf area were significantly highest when cv. Superior, a medium early-maturing cultivar, was grown in the aeroponic system. This better plant growth in the aeroponic system was accompanied by rapid changes of solution pH and EC, and early tuberization. However, with cv. Atlantic, a mid-late maturing cultivar, there were no significant differences in shoot weight and leaf area among the hydroponic systems. The first tuberization was observed in aeroponics on 26–30 and 43–53 days after transplanting for cvs Superior and Atlantic, respectively. Tuberization in aerohydroponics and deep-water culture system occurred about 3–4 and 6–8 days later, respectively. The number of tubers produced was greatest in the deep-water culture system, but the total tuber weight per plant was the least in this system. For cv. Atlantic, the number of tubers 30 g between aerohydroponics and aeroponics. For cv. Superior, there was no difference in the size distribution of tubers between the two aeroponic systems. It could be concluded that deep-water culture system could be used to produce many small tubers (1–5 g) for plant propagation. However, the reduced number of large tubers above 5 g weight in the deep-water culture system, may favor use of either aeroponics or aerohydroponics. These two systems produced a similar number of tubers in each size group for the medium-early season cv. Superior, whereas aerohydroponics produced more tubers than aeroponics for the mid-late cultivar Atlantic.
