05 Jun 1996TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a manipulator assembly for holding and manipulating a surgical instrument in a telerobotic system, which includes an instrument holder removably coupled to a drive assembly so that the holder can be sterilized.
Abstract: The invention is directed to manipulator assembly (2) for holding and manipulating a surgical instrument (14) in a telerobotic system. The manipulator assembly includes an instrument holder removably coupled to a drive assembly so that the holder can be sterilized. The assembly further includes a force sensing element (52) mounted distal to the holder and the drive assembly for detecting forces exerted on the surgical instrument and providing feedback to the surgeon. The invention is also directed to a system and method for releasably holding a surgical instrument (14). The system includes an instrument support for automatically locking mounting pins on the instrument within locking slots on the instrument holder to releasably couple the instrument to the holder. With a twist-lock motion, the surgeon can rapidly engage and disengage various instruments from the holder during a surgical procedure, such as open surgery, laparoscopy or thoracoscopy.

01 Mar 1987TL;DR: A representation for spatial information, called the stochastic map, and associated procedures for building it, reading information from it, and revising it incrementally as new information is obtained, providing a general solution to the problem of estimating uncertain relative spatial relationships.
Abstract: In this paper, we describe a representation for spatial information, called the stochastic map, and associated procedures for building it, reading information from it, and revising it incrementally as new information is obtained. The map contains the estimates of relationships among objects in the map, and their uncertainties, given all the available information. The procedures provide a general solution to the problem of estimating uncertain relative spatial relationships. The estimates are probabilistic in nature, an advance over the previous, very conservative, worst-case approaches to the problem. Finally, the procedures are developed in the context of state-estimation and filtering theory, which provides a solid basis for numerous extensions.

13 Apr 2008TL;DR: This work constructs a scheme for predicates corresponding to the evaluation of inner products over ZN (for some large integer N) that enables constructions in which predicates correspond to the Evaluation of disjunctions, polynomials, CNF/DNF formulae, or threshold predicates.
Abstract: Predicate encryption is a new paradigm generalizing, among other things, identity-based encryption. In a predicate encryption scheme, secret keys correspond to predicates and ciphertexts are associated with attributes; the secret key SKf corresponding to a predicate f can be used to decrypt a ciphertext associated with attribute I if and only if f(I) = 1. Constructions of such schemes are currently known for relatively few classes of predicates.
We construct such a scheme for predicates corresponding to the evaluation of inner products over ZN (for some large integer N). This, in turn, enables constructions in which predicates correspond to the evaluation of disjunctions, polynomials, CNF/DNF formulae, or threshold predicates (among others). Besides serving as a significant step forward in the theory of predicate encryption, our results lead to a number of applications that are interesting in their own right.

07 Apr 1986TL;DR: A model of a real-time intrusion-detection expert system capable of detecting break-ins, penetrations, and other forms of computer abuse is described, based on the hypothesis that security violations can be detected by monitoring a system's audit records for abnormal patterns of system usage.
Abstract: A model of a real-time intrusion-detection expert system capable of detecting break-ins, penetrations, and other forms of computer abuse is described. The model is based on the hypothesis that security violations can be detected by monitoring a system's audit records for abnormal patterns of system usage. The model includes profiles for representing the behavior of subjects with respect to objects in terms of metrics and statistical models, and rules for acquiring knowledge about this behavior from audit records and for detecting anomalous behavior. The model is independent of any particular system, application environment, system vulnerability, or type of intrusion, thereby providing a framework for a general-purpose intrusion-detection expert system.
