TL;DR: Classifications have been proposed to detect the activity of the cysts and to predict the prognostic behavior and the results observed with different options of treatment have been discussed.
Abstract: One hundred and seventy-eight cases of unicameral bone cysts (UBC) treated with curettage and bone grafting were compared to 141 cases treated with cortisone injections. The end results were comparable in the two groups. Local recurrence risk factors in the surgical group were active cyst and previous operations. In the other group they were multilocation of the cyst, active cyst, and size of cyst. A new radiographic classification of aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is proposed in a report of 198 cases of ABC. The treatment of choice in ABC is surgical and the type (curettage, curettage plus phenole or cryosurgery, resection or hemiresection) is selected on the basis of the radiographic aspect and the rate of growth of the cyst. Radiotherapy is only indicated in inoperable ABC cases.

TL;DR: In an unselected group of patients with severe curves a mortality rate of 17% was found, twice as much as in the Italian general population, and the cosmetic appearance of these patients at long-term follow-up was better than that at the end of growth, even though the curves progressed.
Abstract: A total of 187 random cases of untreated idiopathic scoliosis, seen from a minimum of 15 to a maximum of 47 years after the end of growth, were reviewed. All curves increased after skeletal maturity (average progression: 0.4 degrees per year). Thoracic curves tend to progress more than lumbar, lumbar more than thoracolumbar, and thoracolumbar more than double major curves. Pain was present in 114 cases (61%) and appeared more frequently in women, after pregnancies, and with fatigue. Cardiopulmonary symptoms were present in 42 patients (22%), especially those with thoracic and thoracolumbar curves greater than 40 degrees. Psychologic disturbances were found in 35 cases (19%), mostly female patients with thoracic curves greater than 40 degrees. The cosmetic appearance of these patients at long-term follow-up was better compared with that at the end of growth, even though the curves progressed. Patients with decompensation of the trunk at the end of growth seemed to improve with time. In an unselected group of patients with severe curves a mortality rate of 17% was found, twice as much as in the Italian general population.

Abstract: This is a survey of the techniques and results developed by M. Pezzana and his group, which includes, besides the authors, A. Cavicchioli, P. Bandieri and A Donati. The original concept is that of “contracted triangulation”, which was introduced with the main goal of finding a “minimal” atlas for topological manifolds ([P1 1968], [P2 1974], [P3 1974], [FG2 1979]). Only later did the possibility of deducing a graph-theoretical tool — the crystallization — for representing P.L. manifolds occur as a major aspect of the theory ([P4 1975], [F1 1976]). This leads to an application of graph theory to P.L. topology, which seems not to have been explored before. Recently, other authors outside Italy have independently become interested in this subject. For the sake of conciseness, definitions and statements often appear in a form other than that of the quoted references.

TL;DR: In this article, the static displacement field produced by a center of dilation and by a pressure source in a viscoelastic half-space is derived and the associated stress fields are also computed.
Abstract: Summary. Analytical expressions for the static displacement field produced by a centre of dilation and by a pressure source in a viscoelastic half-space are derived. The associated stress fields are also computed. The rheology of a standard linear solid (SLS) is adopted for the shear modulus, while the incompressibility is kept elastic. An instantaneous dilation or variation of pressure is considered as responsible for the deformation. In the centre of dilation model, if the two rigidities of the SLS are of the same order of magnitude, the viscoelastic contribution to the deformation is negligible; if the short-term rigidity is at least two orders of magnitude higher than the other one, the results are indistinguishable from those obtained with a Maxwell solid rheology. In this case, it is found that the initial elastic displacement is amplified by 20 per cent. In the pressure source model, if the rigidities of the SLS are of the same order of magnitude, the initial elastic displacement is amplified by a factor of about 2, but unrealistically high pressure values are required. On the other hand, for a Maxwell solid rheology the displacement grows indefinitely in time, following a sudden application of a finite pressure. The uplift rate is evaluated and it is shown that, for obtaining values of the order of 1 m over one characteristic relaxation time, more reasonable values of pressure are allowed. Applications to ground deformation in volcanic areas are discussed, taking as an example the Campi Flegrei zone, near Naples, Italy.

TL;DR: In this paper, a discretization technique was proposed for the multi-dimensional, steady-state hydrodynamic model of semiconductor devices, and a derivation of the model's appropriate boundary conditions was given.
Abstract: A discretization technique is proposed for the multi‐dimensional, steady‐state hydrodynamic model of semiconductor devices, and a derivation of the model's appropriate boundary conditions is given. The model includes the complete balance equations for charge, momentum and energy, coupled with Poisson's equation, thus accounting for both diffusion and convection phenomena. The technique, like the Scharfetter—Gummel scheme for the simpler drift‐diffusion model, provides an efficient method for solving the hydrodynamic equations, allowing for a more detailed investigation of carrier dynamics in semiconductor devices.

TL;DR: The prevalence of cluster headache in the Republic of San Marino was studied, reviewing the past 15 years' medical records of neurological, ophthalmological, and otorhinolaryngological services and found 15 cases of CH, an estimated prevalence ratio of 69 cases per 100,000 population.
Abstract: The prevalence of cluster headache (CH) in the Republic of San Marino (21,792 inhabitants; 10,893 men and 10,899 women) was studied, reviewing the past 15 years' medical records of neurological, ophthalmological, and otorhinolaryngological services. Further cases were searched for by means of a letter sent to each inhabitant. Control of the case collection method was performed on a random sample of 1314 inhabitants over 7 years, interviewed for possible past or present cluster headache. We found 15 cases of CH (14 men, 1 woman), for an estimated prevalence ratio of 69 cases per 100,000 population. No previous reports have been published on the prevalence of CH in the general population.

TL;DR: Experimental evidence shows that thermoregulatory mechanisms influence the waking-sleeping cycle in both the absence or the presence of a thermal load.
Abstract: Studies on the interaction between sleep and thermoregulation are reviewed with regard to the processes underlying the ultradian evolution of behavioral states. The experimental evidence shows that thermoregulatory mechanisms influence the waking-sleeping cycle in both the absence or the presence of a thermal load. Such a control appears to be a functional necessity to maintain physiological homeostasis.

TL;DR: This work discusses a new algorithm for image registration, which requires only one-dimensional Fourier transformations, and preliminary experimental results are reported.
Abstract: In many application fields (e.g., aerospace and biomedical image processing), one has to deal with a sequence of images whose observation is made difficult by unpredictable relative movements of the camera and the scene. In order to obtain a stable display, the displacement of each image in the sequence with respect to one chosen as a reference must be preliminarily determined. This would usually require two-dimensional algorithms, involving a considerable computational effort. This work discusses a new algorithm for image registration, which requires only one-dimensional Fourier transformations. Preliminary experimental results are reported.

TL;DR: Blood flow in the splanchnic veins was studied in cirrhotics and matched controls by means of a system that combines a mechanical sector scanner with a pulsed Doppler and may prove relevant in the study of hemodynamic effects of drugs and surgery on portal blood flow.
Abstract: Blood flow in the splanchnic veins was studied in cirrhotics and matched controls by means of a system that combines a mechanical sector scanner with a pulsed Doppler. The measurements were validated in an in vitro model. Echo-doppler studies could be carried out reproducibly in only approximately two-thirds of cases because of poor echo transmission or incomplete cooperation. Portal blood velocity was significantly reduced in cirrhotics (10.5 +/- 0.6 cm/s versus 16.0 +/- 0.5 in controls; p less than 0.001), but portal blood flow was normal because of enlarged portal caliber. A complete hemodynamic evaluation of the splenic and superior mesenteric veins was possible in only a few subjects. In selected patients the technique may prove relevant in the study of hemodynamic effects of drugs and surgery on portal blood flow.

Abstract: The effect of transient creep on the inference of long-term mantle viscosity is investigated using theoretical predictions from self-gravitating, layered earth models with Maxwell, Burgers' body, and standard linear solid rheologies. The interaction between transient and steady-state rheologies is studied. The responses of the standard linear solid and Burgers' body models to transient creep in the entire mantle, and of the Burgers' body and Maxwell models to creep in the lower mantle are described. The models' responses are examined in terms of the surface displacement, free air gravity anomaly, wander of the rotation pole, and the secular variation of the degree 2 zonal coefficient of the earth's gravitational potential field. The data reveal that transient creep cannot operate throughout the entire mantle.

Abstract: The previously unassigned gene coding for the anticoagulatory protein C has been mapped on chromosome 2 using a cDNA probe and genomic blots from a human-hamster somatic cell hybrid panel. The assignments of the genes coding for the coagulation factor X to chromosome 13, and for α1-acid glycoprotein to chromosome 9 have been confirmed using a similar direct approach.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for determination of the configurations of a manipulator and associated displacement functions that are based on the determination of singularities in motion of the mechanical system is presented.
Abstract: A manipulator is considered as a system of rigid bodies interconnected by joints that permit relative motions with certain degrees of freedom. Nonlinear equations that relate the parameters of relative motions generally do not provide unique solutions, and consequently the bodies (links) of the mechanical system may form various configuratxons. The authors propose a method for determination of the configurations of this mechanical system and associated displacement functions that are based on the determination of singularities in motion of the mechanical system. Applica tion to the execution of prescribed trajectories by the Uni mation Puma Manipulator is also presented.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors draw together several strands of literature concerned with the measurement of spatial economic and social differences and then suggest an alternative approach, and apply that approach to classifying the problems of 103 of the largest metropolitan regions in the EEC countries.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to draw together several strands of literature concerned with the measurement of spatial economic and social differences and then suggest an alternative approach. We then apply that approach to classifying the problems of 103 of the largest metropolitan regions in the EEC countries. In the process, this allows us to conceptualise and attempt to quantify 'urban decline' in Europe: and simultaneously discover the extent to which urban problems in Europe are still associated with growth. Although it is hoped that the paper is infused with some theoretical and analytical insight, it is primarily empirical in scope. It draws on a small part of a much wider project. Some of the analytical support- particularly the arguments and evidence that support the use of Functional Urban Regions (FURs) as units of analysis, and all of the analytical and policy implications are reported on elsewhere.' 1

TL;DR: A quasisemiclassical method is developed for solving the Schroedinger equation that gives all the exponentially small subseries.
Abstract: The energy of any bound state of the hydrogen molecule ion ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$${\mathrm{}}^{+}$ has an expansion in inverse powers of the internuclear distance R of the form Rayleigh-Schr\"odinger perturbation theory (RSPT) gives the coefficients ${E}^{(N)}$ but is otherwise unable to treat the exponentially small series, which in part are characteristic of the double-well aspect of ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$${\mathrm{}}^{+}$. (Here n denotes the hydrogenic principal quantum number.) We develop a quasisemiclassical method for solving the Schr\"odinger equation that gives all the exponentially small subseries. The RSPT series diverges: for the ground state ${E}^{(N)}$\ensuremath{\sim}-(N+1)!/${e}^{2}$ for large N. The ${E}^{(N)}$ asymptotics are governed via a dispersion relation by the imaginary ${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2R/n}$ series, which itself is given by the square of the ${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}R/n}$ series times a ``normalization integral.'' That the expansion itself contains imaginary terms might seem inconsistent with the reality of the ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$${\mathrm{}}^{+}$ eigenvalues. In fact, the RSPT series is Borel summable for R complex. The Borel sum has a cut on the real R axis, and its limit from above or below the positive R axis is complex. The imaginary ${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2R/n}$ (and higher) series consist of just the counterterms to cancel the imaginary part of the Borel sum.Extensive numerical examples are given. Of interest is a weak (down by a factor ${N}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}6}$) alternating-sign contribution to ${E}^{(N)}$, which is uncovered both theoretically and numerically. Also of interest is the identification of the Borel sum of the RSPT series with nonphysical boundary conditions. This too is illustrated both theoretically and numerically.

TL;DR: Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUT) enables not only the visualization of the portal system and of the esophageal varices, as obtained by transabdominal ultrasonographic and fiberoptic endoscopy, but also the visualization by EUT of intramural and periesphageal collateral veins.
Abstract: Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUT) enables not only the visualization of the portal system and of the esophageal varices, as obtained by transabdominal ultrasonography and fiberoptic endoscopy, but also the visualization of intramural and periesophageal collateral veins. Fifteen cirrhotic patients were examined by EUT without complications. When present, esophageal or gastric varices were always detected. In all cases enlarged extrinsic periesophageal veins were visualized, and in 14 of 15 their caliber was correlated with the size of esophageal varices. In three patients examined after sclerotherapy the submucosal veins had disappeared, but extrinsic collateral vessels were patent. EUT will probably become a fundamental technique in the study of portal hypertension and esophageal varices, before and after therapy.

Abstract: We have reviewed 11 patients after distal fibular resection for benign or malignant tumors with different techniques of reconstruction. Seven patients had normal function and four had reduced mobility, one of whom had a lateral subluxation of the talus. All the patients were without pain. After resection of the lateral malleolus without replacement the soft tissues should be reinforced.
