TL;DR: It is shown that data augmentation provides a rather general formulation for the study of biased prediction techniques using multiple linear regression and a way to obtain predictors given a credible criterion of good prediction is proposed.
Abstract: We show that data augmentation provides a rather general formulation for the study of biased prediction techniques using multiple linear regression. Variable selection is a limiting case, and Ridge regression is a special case of data augmentation. We propose a way to obtain predictors given a credible criterion of good prediction.

Abstract: A simple model for an interacting liquid of particles lacking an axis of rotational symmetry is proposed. The four order parameters necessary to describe an ordered phase are identified. An ensemble of such particles is described by a mean field theory. A phase diagram showing both uniaxial and biaxial phases results. The model predicts a phase diagram similar to that of the phenomenological model of Alben.

TL;DR: In this article, a large class of Banach spaces whose open unit balls are bounded symmetric homogeneous domains is introduced, which are called J*-algebras and have a kind of Jordan tripte product structure.
Abstract: In this article, we exhibit a large class of Banach spaces whose open unit balls are bounded symmetric homogeneous domains. These Banach spaces, which we call J*-algebras, are linear spaces of operators mapping one Hilbert space into another and have a kind of Jordan tripte product structure. In particular, all Hilbert spaces and all B*--algebras are J*-algebras. Moreover, all four types of the classical Cartan domains and their infinite dimensional analogues are the open unit balls of J*-algebras, and the same holds for any finite or infinite product of these domains. Thus we have a setting in which a large number of bounded symmetric homogeneous domains may be studied simultaneously. A particular advantage of this setting is the interconnection which exists between function-theoretic problems and problems of functional analysis. This leads to a simplified discussion of both types of problems. We shall see that the open unit balls of J*-algebras are natural generalizations of the open unit disc of the complex plane. In fact, we give an explicit algebraic formula for Mobius transformations of these balls and show that the origin can be mapped to any desired operator in the ball with one of the Mobius transformations. An extremal form of the Schwarz lemma then leads immediately to the representation of each biholomorphic mapping between the open unit balls of two J*-algebras as a composition of a Mobius transformation and a linear isometry of one of the J*-algebras onto the other. Such linear isometries reduce to a multiplication by unitary operators for mappings in the identity component of the group of all biholomorphic mappings of the open unit ball of a C*-algebra with identity. However, in general, linear isometries of one J*-algebra onto another can be complicated. Still, using the mentioned Schwarz lemma and Mobius transformations, we show that all such linear isometries preserve the J*-structure. A consequence of these results is that the open unit balls of two J*-a{gebras are holomorphically equivalent if and only if the J*-algebras are isometrically isomorphic under a mapping preserving the J * structure. Another consequence is that the open unit ball of a J*-algebra is holomorphically equivalent to a product of balls if and only if the J*-algebra is isometrically isomorphic to a product of J*--algebras. The last result connects the factorization of domains with the factorization of J*-algebras and has a number of interesting applications. For example, using Cartan's classification of bounded symmetric domains in C n, we classify all J*-algebras of dimension less than 16. Moreover, we reduce the problem of classifying all finite dimensional J*-algebras to the problem of finding some J*-algebras whose open unit balls are holomorphically equivalent to the two exceptional Cartan domains in dimensions 16 and 27, respectively, when such J*-algebras exist. If there are such J*-atgebras in both cases, then every bounded symmetric

TL;DR: It is reported that N. tabacum arose from the hybridisation of N. sylvestris and N. tomentosiformis, and the putative progenitor species was N. otophora, a species in the Tomentosae section of Nicotiana.
Abstract: THERE is no well-authenticated record of the occurrence of Nicotiana tabacum, the commercial tobacco plant, in the wild state, and so its origin and evolution are of great interest. N. tabacum (n=24) is believed to have arisen by chromosome doubling after hybridisation of N. sylvestris Spegazzini and Comes (n = 12) with a species in the Tomentosae section of Nicotiana. Goodspeed and Clausen1 suggested that N. tomentosa Ruiz and Pavon (n = 12) was the species, but Clausen2 amended it to N. tomentosiformis Goodspeed (n = 12). Goodspeed3 favoured N. otophora Grisebach (n = 12), however, because of its present-day geographical distribution; N. otophora is found together with N. sylvestris in an area on the eastern slopes of the Andes whereas N. tomentosiformis occurs further north where N. sylvestris has not been found. Later evidence, however, suggests N. tomentosiformis as the more likely progenitor of N. tabacum. Gerstel4, from an analysis of the segregation of artificial polyploids of N. tabacum × N. tomentosiformis and N. tabacum × N. otophora, concluded that N. tomentosiformis showed the greater chromosome homology with N. tabacum, and Sheen5–7 from an analysis of isoenzyme patterns and sterol composition supported the conclusion that N. sylvestris and N. tomentosiformis were the likely progenitors of N. tabacum. From an analysis by isoelectric focusing of the polypeptide composition of Fraction I protein isolated from N. tabacum and the putative progenitor species, we now report that N. tabacum arose from the hybridisation of N. sylvestris ♀ × N. tomentosiformis ♂.

TL;DR: The production of invasive and metastatic tumours in hamsters soon after injecting human cancer cells of diverse histopathology into their cheek pouches was observed, and the involvement of oncogenic viruses was not excluded.
Abstract: IT is exceedingly rare for neoplasms to be invasive and metastatic when grafted in xenogeneic hosts1. During the past 7 yr, we have on numerous occasions observed the production of invasive and metastatic tumours in hamsters soon after injecting human cancer cells of diverse histopathology into their cheek pouches2–7. We have interpreted this biological phenomenon as due to the in vivo fusion of the human tumour with normal hamster host cells2–8, although the involvement of oncogenic viruses was not excluded. Recently, other evidence supporting the hybridisation of tumour with normal cells in vivo has appeared9. The significance of such events in the neoplastic process, however, has yet to be appreciated.

TL;DR: In this paper, a rotatable 10-MHz shear transducer was used as the transmitter and receiver of ultrasonic pulses for stress analysis in deformed solids, and an enlarged display of the 10MHz modulated-pulse pattern of reflected echoes was used to determine the directions of principal axis of the stress within ± 3 deg.
Abstract: Stress-induced optical birefringence in transparent materials has long been a common technique of stress analysis. Although stress-induced acoustic birefringence was discovered more than 20 years ago, its development and actual applications are still limited. This paper will look at the similarities and differences between the propagation of light waves in photoelastic materials and the propagation of ultrasonic waves in deformed solids. Critical comparisons of the experimental methods employed in photoelasticity with those available in modern ultrasonic measuring technique show why previous studies on ultrasonic measurement of stresses were not very successful. A new experimental technique is devised for using ultrasonic waves for stress analysis. The technique employs a single rotatable 10-MHz shear transducer as the transmitter and receiver of ultrasonic pulses. The enlarged display of the 10-MHz modulated-pulse pattern of reflected echoes provides a convenient way to determine the directions of principal axis of the stress within ±3 deg. The pulse-echo-overlap method is used to measure the absolute velocities of the two principal shear waves. The difference in principal stresses is then calculated from the velocity measurements. Test results of common structural-aluminum and steel specimens under uniaxial compression show a linear relation between the velocity changes and the applied stress. Ultrasonic measurements of stress distribution in a 6.35-cm diameter, 1.9-cm-thick aluminum disk under diametric compression are also reported.

Abstract: The paper surveys the basic results and nonresults for decision rules in stochastic programming. It exhibits some of the difficulties encountered when trying to restrict the class of acceptable rules to those possessing specific functional forms. A liberal dosage of examples is provided which illustrate various cases. The treatment is unified by making use of the equivalence of various formulations which have appeared in the literature. An appendix is devoted to the P-model for stochastic programs with chance constraints.

TL;DR: It is postulated that the changes occurring within the brain are secondary to the disturbances in brain folic acid metabolism produced by the methotrexate; this effect may have been accentuated by the blockage of the cerebrospinal fluid pathways, the delayed effects of irradiation, or the administration of anticonvulsants.
Abstract: Four children having recurrent primary malignant posterior fossa tumors de-developed a leukoencephalopathy during treatment with methotrexate administered via a ventriculocisternal catheter. Symptoms and signs, including visual disturbances; seizures, quadriparesis, and organic dementia appeared from 3 to 15 months following the initiation of methotrexate therapy. At autopsy all four patients had severe leukoencephalopathy, chiefly involving die central white matter of the cerebral hemispheres; one patient had no residual tumor. All patients had received earlier irradiation, but the lesions within the brain are believed not to represent irradiation necrosis. It is postulated that the changes occurring within the brain are secondary to the disturbances in brain folic acid metabolism produced by the methotrexate; this effect may have been accentuated by the blockage of the cerebrospinal fluid pathways, the delayed effects of irradiation, or the administration of anticonvulsants. Intrathecal methotrexate is capable of eradicating certain intracranial malignancies, but its administration must be more judicious in order to avoid lethal complications.

Abstract: A new conceptualization of trust is presented, drawing from the game theory, credibility, and sensitivity training literatures. It is argued that trust occurs only in interpersonal relationships having specified characteristics and that the cognitive state of trust must be differentiated from trusting behaviors. An individual's cognitive state of trust involves his perceiving another person as knowledgeable of the nature of the contingency between them, competent to perform his intended acts, and motivated to prevent the trusting person from receiving unacceptably negative outcomes in their relationship. Trusting behaviors occur in a variety of forms but share the characteristics of increasing the individual's vulnerability to the other.

Abstract: This essay analyses the explanatory power of Davis, Dempster, and Wildavsky's theory of budgetary incrementalism. By means of sensitivity testing, it demonstrates that inferences to “gaming” or strategic explanations of budgetary incrementalism are not warranted on the basis of correlational analysis. To explain budgetary incrementalism more satisfactorily, recourse is made to concepts and variables explicit in the vocabulary of the budget process participants. When mandatory requests are distinguished from programmatic requests, the differential treatment of the two by Congress is observed to allow good explanation of budgetary relations. In particular, the inexorable but small mandatory request, which is almost automatically granted, is adequate by itself to explain why requests always increase and why one year's appropriation surpasses the previous one.

TL;DR: A 61-year-old woman who had proximal muscle weakness since 38 years of age showed widespread muscle wasting, absent tendon reflexes, and electromyographic findings of a neuropathy, consistent with a generalized disorder of carnitine metabolism that may involve carnitines transport across cell membranes.
Abstract: A 61-year-old woman had proximal muscle weakness since 38 years of age. Eventually, her distal muscles became affected and she showed widespread muscle wasting, absent tendon reflexes, and electromyographic findings of a neuropathy. On biopsy, there was a lipid storage myopathy, lipid-containing vacuoles in leukocytes, and vacuoles in Schwann cells. The muscle carnitine level was abnormally low, but the serum carnitine level was normal. The findings are consistent with a generalized disorder of carnitine metabolism that may involve carnitine transport across cell membranes.

TL;DR: It is proposed that the lack of success in fully describing the pineal tract pathways in fishes and the prevailing ambivalence are owing to methodological weaknesses and that the pattern of central projections described here for trout may prove to be generally true for other fishes as well.
Abstract: The central projections and terminations of the pineal nerve tract in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, were studied using the cobalt chloride method developed for selectively staining nerve fibres by Pitman et al. (1972). A modification of the method is described for the first time making its use possible in the study of central pathways of the pineal nerve tract.
