Examines the historical development of parody in order to examine its place, purpose and practice in the postmodern world of contemporary artforms.

You meet an English gentleman at your golf club. He is beefy, full of health, the moral of the boy from an English Public School of the finest type. You discover gradually, that he is hopelessly neurasthenic, dishonest in matters of small change, but unexpectedly self-sacrificing, a dreadful liar but a most painfully careful student of lepidoptera and, finally, from the public prints, a bigamist who was once, under another name, hammered on the Stock Exchange . . . (Ford 1924;129) Thus Ford Madox Ford on the complexities of becoming acquainted; and of the consequent need to abandon the straight-forward chronology of the 19th-century novel. The process of discovering Ford's hypothetical English gentleman has obvious analogies with The Good Soldier, where the discursive narrator unravels the adultery and extravagance of another English gentleman, together with the deceit and infidelity of his own wife. Ford's example also suggests, as well as any lengthy critical study, something of his own assumptions and literary technique. Thematic analysis of The Good Soldier is not an object of the present essay, although the briefest general orientation in this field indicates two tendencies prominent in readings of the novel.' According to the first of these, the substance of the good soldier lies in the teller, not the tale; Dowell is reliable or unreliable, true or false-or even paradoxically both; his views are consonant or dissonant with those of the implied author; the resultant story is comedy or tragedy-or even tragi-comedy-irony (intentional or not), or mere literary parody. In this context, Mark Schorer's (1957) introduction to the Viking edition of the novel proved paradigmatic in form and classic in status. Schorer's essay (incidentally arguing against the reliability of Dowell) remains the model for a number of subsequent studies, not necessarily in agreement with him, but whose titles betray a similarity in approach with their promises of "readings," "interpretations" or "re-examinations"' A second critical approach tends to stress some individual thematic element of the novel. Este artigo analisa a adaptacao de “Titus Andronicus” feita por Julie Taymor em contraponto a adaptacao de Jane Howell da mesma peca. Foram estabelecidas algumas diferencas e semelhancas entre as performances e examinadas algumas interpolacoes e transposicoes nas duas adaptacoes. Finalmente, foram salientadas as diferentes abordagens da violencia presente na peca shakespeariana nas duas adaptacoes filmicas. Esta reflexao baseou-se teoricamente nas contribuicoes de Linda Hutcheon (1985), Edward Rocklin (1999), Jay Halio (2000), Pascale Aebischer (2002), Lucian Ghita (2004), Peter Donaldson (2005). Concluimos que cada diretora estabeleceu sua concepcao em interacao com sua experiencia de vida, seus trabalhos anteriores, suas crencas, sua visao de mundo, sua percepcao do publico-alvo, sua relacao com Shakespeare. Processo complexo que tambem incorpora na materializacao cenica as multiplas leituras de Titus, presentes implicita ou explicitamente, no trabalho coletivo desenvolvido na producao cinematografica.
