TLDR
The AIDS epidemic has dramatically changed the profile of cancer in Uganda, and trends in the AIDS-related cancers are consistent with current knowledge concerning the mechanisms behind the increased risk.

International Classification of Childhood Cancer, third edition

TL;DR: The third edition of the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD‐O‐3), which was published in 2000, introduced major changes in coding and classification of neoplasms, notably for leukemias and lymphomas, which are important groups of cancer types that occur in childhood.
Journal ArticleDOI

AIDS-related malignancies.

TL;DR: Gaining insight into the epidemiology and mechanisms that underlie AIDS-related cancers has provided a better understanding of cancer immunity and viral oncogenesis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cancer burden in Africa and opportunities for prevention.

TL;DR: The current patterns of cancer in Africa are reviewed and the opportunities for reducing the burden through the application of resource level interventions, including implementation of vaccinations for liver and cervical cancers, tobacco control policies for smoking‐related cancers, and low‐tech early detection methods for cervical cancer are reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Update on Kaposi's sarcoma and other HHV8 associated diseases. Part 1: epidemiology, environmental predispositions, clinical manifestations, and therapy.

TL;DR: If HAART is able to prevent spreading of KS, local therapy of KS may become an essential component of patient management and rationales and graduated treatment algorithms for local and systemic therapy in patients with KS are presented to appropriately meet the challenges of this extraordinary neoplasm.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cancer Incidence in Nigeria: A Report from Population-based Cancer Registries

TL;DR: Estimates of cancer incidence in Nigeria based on data from 2 population-based cancer registries that are part of the Nigerian national cancer registry program suggest substantial increase in incidence of breast cancer in recent times and highlights the need for high quality regional cancer Registries in Nigeria.

AIDS-associated non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

TL;DR: Investigation of the epidemiology and aetiology of AIDS-related non-Hodgkin lymphoma by analysing data from cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta, USA, up to June 30, 1989 suggested there was probably no single cause for all the types of lymphoma.
Journal ArticleDOI

High incidence of anal cancer among AIDS patients

TL;DR: A strikingly increased risk of anal cancer among people with AIDS is established and this data are consistent with a previously hypothesized association between HIV-induced immunodeficiency and anal cancer development.
Journal ArticleDOI

Kaposi's sarcoma in childhood: an analysis of 100 cases from Uganda and relationship to HIV infection.

TL;DR: The dramatic increase of childhood KS implies that the prevalence of causative factors is rising in Uganda, and a newly described herpes‐like virus is implicated as the cause of KS (KSHV), and DNA sequences of this virus were present in all of 8 childhood cases tested.
Journal ArticleDOI

Risk of cancer in people with AIDS.

TL;DR: This study provides strong support for the hypothesis that Hodgkin's disease is an AIDS-associated condition and there was an increased incidence of several other forms of cancer, some of which are known to occur at increased rates in transplant recipients who have received immunosuppressive therapy.
