TLDR
Enhanced absorption and reduced synthesis of cholesterol is related to a positive family history of cardiovascular diseases and the development of concomitant CAD in patients with AS.
Abstract
ObjectiveHypercholesterolemia is a risk factor for aortic stenosis (AS) and for coronary artery disease (CAD). Serum cholesterol concentrations are determined by intestinal cholesterol absorption and endogenous cholesterol synthesis. Vascular effects of differences in cholesterol metabolism in patie

Implementing Phytosterols Into Medical Practice as a Cholesterol-Lowering Strategy: Overview of Efficacy, Effectiveness, and Safety

TL;DR: This review discusses the present knowledge that exists about the ability for therapeutic dosages of PSs to confer protection from cardiovascular-related mortality and morbidity and summarizes the factors that affect PS efficacy and the Canadian regulations that govern the use ofPSs as cholesterol-lowering agents in foods and supplements.

Serum plant and other noncholesterol sterols, cholesterol metabolism and 22-year mortality among middle-aged men.

TL;DR: Higher serum plant sterol levels in middle-aged men predicted lower long-term mortality risk, possibly reflecting an association between higher synthesis/lower absorption of cholesterol and mortality.

Relationship between cholesterol synthesis and intestinal absorption is associated with cardiovascular risk

TL;DR: There is accumulating evidence that lower hepatic synthesis and higher intestinal absorption markers are associated with increased cardiovascular risk, and prospective clinical trials are needed to evaluate whether subjects with altered cholesterol homeostasis may benefit from treatment strategies that reduce cholesterol absorption in addition to statin treatment.

Estimation of the Concentration of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol in Plasma, Without Use of the Preparative Ultracentrifuge

TL;DR: A method for estimating the cholesterol content of the serum low-density lipoprotein fraction (Sf0-20) is presented and comparison of this suggested procedure with the more direct procedure, in which the ultracentrifuge is used, yielded correlation coefficients of .94 to .99.

Prevention of coronary heart disease with pravastatin in men with hypercholesterolemia. West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study Group

TL;DR: Treatment with pravastatin significantly reduced the incidence of myocardial infarction and death from cardiovascular causes without adversely affecting the risk of death from noncardiovascular causes in men with moderate hypercholesterolemia and no history of my Cardiac Infarction.

Prevention of coronary heart disease with pravastatin in men with hypercholesterolemia

TL;DR: In this article, a double-blind study was designed to determine whether the administration of pravastatin to men with hypercho-lesterolemia and no history of myocardial infarction correlated with the combined incidence of nonfatal mycardial in-farction and death from coronary heart disease.
