Abstract
Awareness of individual and group activities is critical to successful collaboration and is commonly supported in CSCW systems by active, information generation mechanisms separate from the shared workspace. These mechanisms pena~ise information providers, presuppose relevance to the recipient, and make access difficult, We discuss a study of shared editor use which suggests that awareness information provided and exploited passively through the shared workspace, allows users to move smoothly between close and loose collaboration, and to assign and coordinate work dynamically. Passive awareness mechanisms promise effective support for collaboration requiring this sort of behaviour, whilst avoiding problems with active approaches.

The user-centered iterative design of collaborative writing software

TL;DR: This paper presents the user-centred iterative design of software that supports collaborative writing that grew out of a study of how people write together that included a survey of writers and a laboratory study of writing teams linked by a variety of communications media.

Policies and roles in collaborative applications

TL;DR: This paper presents a system that allows users to control collaboration by enacting policies that serve as general guidelines to restrict and define the behavior of the system in reaction to the state of the world.

Expert crowdsourcing with flash teams

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that Foundry and flash teams enable crowdsourcing of a broad class of goals including design prototyping, course development, and film animation, in half the work time of traditional self-managed teams.

Methods, apparatus, and products for identifying a conversation

TL;DR: One aspect of the invention is a method of using a computer to identify a conversation and the other aspect is an audio processing system that identifies conversations and enhances each conversation for each user in the conversation as mentioned in this paper.

Beyond Bandwidth: Dimensions of Connection in Interpersonal Communication

TL;DR: Attention is drawn to a relation between people that defines a state of communicative readiness in which fruitful communication is likely, and three dimensions of connection that activate readiness are proposed: affinity, commitment, and attention.

Why CSCW applications fail: problems in the design and evaluationof organizational interfaces

TL;DR: Examination of several application areas reveals a common dynamic: a factor contributing to the application’s failure is the disparity between those who will benefit from an application and those who must do additional work to support it.
