Journal ArticleDOI
Composite three-dimensional woven scaffolds with interpenetrating network hydrogels to create functional synthetic articular cartilage.
TL;DR: A three‐dimensionally woven fiber scaffold that is infiltrated with an interpenetrating network hydrogel can build a functional biomaterial that provides the load‐bearing and tribological properties of native cartilage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biological aspects of early osteoarthritis
TL;DR: The high socioeconomic impact of OA suggests that a better insight into the mechanisms of early OA may be a key to develop more targeted reconstructive therapies at this first stage of the disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effects of matrix compression on proteoglycan metabolism in articular cartilage explants.
TL;DR: The study indicates that compression of the tissue to physiological strain magnitudes serves as a signal to modulate chondrocyte biosynthetic and catabolic responses through the depth of cartilage, while prolonged compression at higher strains may be responsible for tissue and cell damage.

TL;DR: Results show that collagen primarily controls the dynamic tissue response while proteoglycans affect more the static properties, and Experimental measurements in compression and tension suggest a nonlinear compression-tension behavior of articular cartilage in the direction perpendicular to articular surface.
Journal ArticleDOI
Why mechanobiology?: A survey article
TL;DR: The philosophy and progress of skeletal mechanobiology are discussed and it is believed that the scientific community has the knowledge and tools to prove, understand and use functional adaptation to benefit medicine and human health.
