A crude MeOH extract of Syzygium aromaticum (clove) exhibited preferential growth-inhibitory activity against Gram-negative anaerobic periodontal oral pathogens, including Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia.Abstract:
A crude MeOH extract of Syzygium aromaticum (clove) exhibited preferential growth-inhibitory activity against Gram-negative anaerobic periodontal oral pathogens, including Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia. By means of bioassay-directed chromatographic fractionation, eight active compounds were isolated from this extract and were identified as 5,7-dihydroxy-2-methylchromone 8-C-beta-D-glucopyranoside, biflorin, kaempferol, rhamnocitrin, myricetin, gallic acid, ellagic acid, and oleanolic acid, based on spectroscopic evidence. The antibacterial activity of these pure compounds was determined against Streptococcus mutans, Actinomyces viscosus, P. gingivalis, and P. intermedia. The flavones, kaempferol and myricetin, demonstrated potent growth-inhibitory activity against the periodontal pathogens P. gingivalis and P. intermedia.read more

Antioxidant property of aroma extract isolated from clove buds [Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. et Perry]
TL;DR: Aroma extract from dried clove buds [Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. et Perry] was obtained by using steam distillation under mild conditions (55°C and 95 mm Hg). The antioxidant property of the aroma extract was evaluated in two different assays.

TL;DR: Thirty eight plant‐derived flavonoids representing seven different structural groups were tested for activities against antibiotic‐resistant bacteria using the disc‐diffusion assay and broth dilution assay and the results of the radiolabel incorporation assay showed that myricetin inhibited protein synthesis by B. cepacia.

Biological activity of five antibacterial flavonoids from Combretum erythrophyllum (Combretaceae)
TL;DR: This is the first report of biological activity with several of these antibacterial flavonoids, i.e. apigenin; genkwanin; rhamnocitrin; quercetin-5,3'-dimethylether;rhamnazin, which had a higher anti-inflammatory activity than the positive control mefenamic acid.

Antibacterial activity of [10]-gingerol and [12]-gingerol isolated from ginger rhizome against periodontal bacteria.
TL;DR: This study revealed that the ethanol and n‐hexane extracts of ginger exhibited antibacterial activities against three anaerobic Gram‐negative bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 53978, Porphysonas endodontalis ATCC 35406 and Prevotella intermedia ATCC 25611, causing periodontal diseases.

Chemotherapeutic agents for controlling plaque and gingivitis
TL;DR: A new generation of more specific antibacterial agents that interfere with attachment to pellicle can be developed, it is hard to predict, however, that they will affect gingivitis, at least until there is more information on what specific organisms should be targeted.

Effect of tea polyphenols on glucan synthesis by glucosyltransferase from Streptococcus mutans
TL;DR: Extracts of green tea and black tea, and polyphenol mixtures showed appreciable inhibition in the synthesis of insoluble glucan, and theaflavin and its mono- and digallates had potent inhibitory activities at concentrations of 1-10 mM against GTF.
