Abstract
The acid-catalyzed synthesis of cucurbit[n]urils from formaldehyde and glycoluril is poorly understood. In this paper, we examine a wide range of reaction conditions that include the effects of acid type, acid concentration, reactant concentrations, and temperature to both probe the mechanism and optimize the yields of isolated cucurbit[n]urils, where n = 5−10. A mechanism for the formation of these cucurbit[n]urils is presented. Individual cucurbit[n]urils were unambiguously identified in reaction mixtures using ESMS and 13C NMR.

Cucurbit[7]uril complexes of crown-ether derived styryl and (bis)styryl dyes.

TL;DR: It is found that the metal ions prefer to bind to the electrostatically negative ureidyl C=O portals of the CB[7] rather than with the crown ether moiety of the styryl dyes.

Use of the macrocyclic ligand cucurbit[6]uril for isolation of tetranuclear lanthanide aquahydroxo-carboxylate complexes from aqueous solutions

TL;DR: The tetradentate coordination of the macrocyclic cucurbit[6]uril ligands through the portals leads to the formation of sandwich compounds, in which the tetranuclear hydroxo complex is located between two microcyclic molecules as discussed by the authors.

Formation of Cucurbit[8]uril-Based Supramolecular Hydrogel Beads Using Droplet-Based Microfluidics.

TL;DR: The use of microdroplets as templates for the fabrication of uniform-sized supramolecular hydrogel beads, assembled by supramolescular cross-linking of functional biopolymers with the macrocyclic host molecule, cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]).

Determination of the kinetics underlying the pKa shift for the 2-aminoanthracenium cation binding with cucurbit[7]uril

TL;DR: The studies at various pH values showed different mechanisms for the formation of the AH(+)@CB[7] complex, with this complex formed either by the binding of AH(+) or by the initial binding of A followed by protonation.

Host–guest complexes of cucurbituril with the 4-methylbenzylammonium lon, alkali-metal cations and NH4+

TL;DR: In this article, the existence of two different complexes of cucurbituril with 4-methylbenzylammonium ions was reported. But the 1 : 1 stability constants were not reported for the 2 : 1 complexes with different cations.
