Abstract
The acid-catalyzed synthesis of cucurbit[n]urils from formaldehyde and glycoluril is poorly understood. In this paper, we examine a wide range of reaction conditions that include the effects of acid type, acid concentration, reactant concentrations, and temperature to both probe the mechanism and optimize the yields of isolated cucurbit[n]urils, where n = 5−10. A mechanism for the formation of these cucurbit[n]urils is presented. Individual cucurbit[n]urils were unambiguously identified in reaction mixtures using ESMS and 13C NMR.

Multi-nuclear platinum complexes encapsulated in cucurbit[n]uril as an approach to reduce toxicity in cancer treatment

TL;DR: The dinuclear platinum complex trans-[[Pt(NH(3))(2)Cl](2)micro-dpzm](2+)(di-Pt) binds inside cucurbit[7]uril with slow exchange kinetics which does not significantly affect the cytotoxicity of the dinuclear complex but reactivity at the platinum centre is reduced.

Encapsulation of Drug Molecules by Cucurbiturils: Effects on their Chemical Properties in Aqueous Solution

TL;DR: The cucurbituril complexation of drug molecules has been shown to generally increase the guests’ pKa values through preferential inclusion of the protonated species, modulate other equilibria involving the guest, improve the solubility in aqueous solution, reduce the toxicity and other side effects, as well as enhance the stability and targeted delivery of the drug molecule.

Cucurbit[7]uril containers for targeted delivery of oxaliplatin to cancer cells.

TL;DR: Stay on Target: The cucurbit[7]uril derivative 1 which bears a covalently attached biotin targeting ligand allows for the efficient delivery of oxaliplatin as its 1•oxali Platin complex to cancer cells resulting in enhanced cytotoxicity relative to oxali platin alone.

Host–guest complexes of cucurbituril with the 4-methylbenzylammonium lon, alkali-metal cations and NH4+

TL;DR: In this article, the existence of two different complexes of cucurbituril with 4-methylbenzylammonium ions was reported. But the 1 : 1 stability constants were not reported for the 2 : 1 complexes with different cations.
