Abstract
Ž. Total mercury and selenium concentrations were determined in hair samples collected from Wari Pacaas Novos ´ Indians living in Doutor Tanajura village, Gujara-Mirim city, Rondonia State. The mercury concentrations in some ´ˆ samples are much higher than the values determined in samples from individuals not exposed to mercury contamination, occupationally or environmentally. The selenium concentrations are in the normal range. A correlation was observed between the mercury and selenium concentration and the values of the molar ratio approach 1 at low Hg concentrations. This fact is related to the equimolar complex formed by Ž . 4 HgSe Seleprotein P, which can decrease the bioavailable mercury in the organism. 2002 Elsevier Science nm

Protocols for Environmental and Health Assessment of Mercury Released by Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Miners

TL;DR: In this article, the authors bring simple, replicable and sustainable techniques to be used by environmental and health agencies, mining-related institutions and researchers for monitoring mercury pollution in small-scale gold mining.

Maternal mercury exposure and neuro-motor development in breastfed infants from Porto Velho (Amazon), Brazil

TL;DR: It seems that development delays of exclusively breastfed infants are a component of the health inequalities that accompanies socioeconomic disadvantages in breastfeeding urban mothers.

Elevated blood selenium levels in the Brazilian Amazon.

TL;DR: B-Se varied between communities, was significantly higher among alcohol drinkers and farmers, but not associated with age, sex or tobacco consumption, and a significant positive relation between B-Se and B-Hg was noted, independently of the overall fish consumption.

Short communication Mercury and selenium concentrations in hair samples of women in fertile age from Amazon riverside communities

T. Oikawa
TL;DR: Hg exposure levels in reproductive age women were only slightly higher than a provisional tolerable weekly intake of MeHg would provide, and Hg concentration in maternal hair samples was independent of gestational age, indicating low Se concentration in pregnant women indicates high mineral consumption by fetal organism to satisfy their metabolic requirements raised during pregnancy.

Maternal seafood diet, methylmercury exposure, and neonatal neurologic function

TL;DR: Prenatal exposure to methylmercury from contaminated seafood was associated with an increased risk of neurodevelopmental deficit in this North Atlantic population, although effects of other seafood components were not detectable.

Mercury and methylmercury in fish and human hair from the Tapajós river basin, Brazil

TL;DR: Fish and hair samples as the best indicators of human methylmercury contamination were investigated in the main cities and villages along the Tapajós river basin and critical fish, areas, and more exposed human groups are identified.

Methylmercury pollution in the Amazon, Brazil

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the extent of environmental mercury pollution due to goldmining activities in the Amazon, and determined the concentrations of total mercury and methylmercury for human hair and fish samples from five fishing villages.

Mercury distribution in waters and fishes of the upper Madeira rivers and mercury exposure in riparian Amazonian populations.

TL;DR: The results show that the major health impacts caused by mercury affect people who are not working directly in gold mining activities but who have a regular fish diet, and an increase in contamination in young children still being breast-fed, confirming that hair mercury concentration in babies was significantly affected by maternal mercury contamination during pregnancy.
