TLDR
This chapter provides an overview of the historical development, general system design, upscaling, saline and brackish water systems, fish and plant choices as well as management issues of coupled aquaponics especially in Europe.Abstract:
Coupled aquaponics is the archetype form of aquaponics. The technical complexity increases with the scale of production and required water treatment, e.g. filtration, UV light for microbial control, automatic controlled feeding, computerization and biosecurity. Upscaling is realized through multiunit systems that allow staggered fish production, parallel cultivation of different plants and application of several hydroponic subsystems. The main task of coupled aquaponics is the purification of aquaculture process water through integration of plants which add economic benefits when selecting suitable species like herbs, medicinal plants or ornamentals. Thus, coupled aquaponics with closed water recirculation systems has a particular role to fulfil.read more

The aquaponic principle—It is all about coupling
Gösta F. M. Baganz,Gösta F. M. Baganz,Ranka Junge,Maria Célia Portella,Simon Goddek,Karel J. Keesman,Daniela Baganz,Georg Staaks,Christopher Shaw,Frank Lohrberg,Werner Kloas,Werner Kloas +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors introduced the new terms coupling type and coupling degree, where the former qualitatively characterises the water-mediated connections of aquaponic subsystems and the latter comprises a set of parameters to quantitatively determine the coupling's efficiency of internal streams, for example, water and nutrients.

Integrated production of Nile tilapia juveniles and lettuce using biofloc technology
Sara Mello Pinho,Luiz H. David,Simon Goddek,Maurício Gustavo Coelho Emerenciano,Maurício Gustavo Coelho Emerenciano,Maria Célia Portella +5 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that the integrated production of tilapia juveniles and lettuce using FP might be technically feasible if specific fertilization management or mechanisms are developed to refine the critical points of the system to improve plant production.

South American fish species suitable for aquaponics: a review
Sara Mello Pinho,Sara Mello Pinho,Luiz H. David,Fabiana Garcia,Fabiana Garcia,Karel J. Keesman,Maria Célia Portella,Simon Goddek +7 more
TL;DR: Data for five South American fish species with potential for aquaponics were compared with existing data for the main traditional warm water species in this system, tilapia and catfish and the degree of suitability of the novel species for these systems in terms of zootechnical performance, tolerance to water quality and nutritional composition of fish flesh were discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors integrated color imaging and deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) to diagnose the nutrient status of lettuce grown in aquaponics, which achieved an accuracy of 99.1%.

Trophic structure, species richness and biodiversity in Danish lakes: changes along a phosphorus gradient
TL;DR: The suggestion that fish have a significant structuring role in eutrophic lakes is supported by data from three lakes in which major changes in the abundance of planktivorous fish occurred following fish kill or fish manipulation.

How plants communicate using the underground information superhighway.
TL;DR: Increasing evidence suggests that root exudates might initiate and manipulate biological and physical interactions between roots and soil organisms, and thus play an active role in root-root and root-microbe communication.

Organic phosphorus compounds as a phosphorus source for higher plants through the activity of phosphatases produced by plant roots and microorganisms
TL;DR: The efficiency of phosphatases produced by clover, barley, oats and wheat was investigated in soils treated with sodium glycerophosphate, lecithin and phytin, and it is suggested that the limiting factor on plant utilization of organic P is the availability of hydrolysable organic P sources.
