Design Experiments in Educational Research

TLDR
Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent and a theoretical orientation as mentioned in this paper, developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them, and the authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and conduct a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment.
Abstract
In this article, the authors first indicate the range of purposes and the variety of settings in which design experiments have been conducted and then delineate five crosscutting features that collectively differentiate design experiments from other methodologies. Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent—“engineering” particular forms of learning—and a theoretical orientation—developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them. The authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and in conducting a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment. Logistical issues, issues of measure, the importance of working through the data systematically, and the need to be explicit about the criteria for making inferences are discussed.

Measuring the Implementation of UDL in Classrooms and Schools: Initial Field Test Results:

TL;DR: The conceptual underpinnings of UDL measurement and the results of an initial field test indicate that the UDL-OMT has good to excellent internal consistency and can characterize differences in UDL implementation across a continuum of settings.

The Bias-Variance Tradeoff: How Data Science Can Inform Educational Debates.

TL;DR: It is claimed that data science as a field can provide broader insights to education research and show how the bias-variance tradeoff from machine learning can be formally generalized to be applicable to several prominent educational debates.

Barriers to Change: Findings from Three Literacy Professional Learning Initiatives.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe lessons learned from three separate literacy professional learning initiatives that took place in elementary schools in three different locations: high-poverty urban, medium-poor rural, and lowpoverty suburban, and discover shared barriers that impeded each of the initiatives from promoting substantial change.

Creating a culture of inquiry in the classroom while fostering an understanding of theoretical concepts in direct current electric circuits: a balanced approach

TL;DR: In this article, a design research cycle was conducted to investigate how physics instruction aimed at creating a classroom culture of inquiry can contribute to Grade 9 students' understanding of theoretical concepts in direct current electric circuits.

Forward-oriented designing for learning as a means to achieve educational quality

TL;DR: It is concluded that Design for Learning can be deemed a mediational instrument to explore methods of transforming existing educational situations into desired situations, linking the vision of educational quality with concrete practices of the teacher and students' daily activities.
