Design Experiments in Educational Research

TLDR
Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent and a theoretical orientation as mentioned in this paper, developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them, and the authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and conduct a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment.
Abstract
In this article, the authors first indicate the range of purposes and the variety of settings in which design experiments have been conducted and then delineate five crosscutting features that collectively differentiate design experiments from other methodologies. Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent—“engineering” particular forms of learning—and a theoretical orientation—developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them. The authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and in conducting a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment. Logistical issues, issues of measure, the importance of working through the data systematically, and the need to be explicit about the criteria for making inferences are discussed.

Emerging Forms of Formative Intervention Research in Education

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on emerging forms of formative intervention research in educational settings in the United States and present three key features with CHAT: a focus on historically accumulating structural tensions within and across activity systems, use of double-stimulation as a method of intervention, and expanding agency as the object of intervention.

Coteaching as professional development for cooperating teachers

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report on findings from a longitudinal study in which cooperating teachers cotaught science classes with student teachers, and teachers expanded their teaching practice and developed new insights about their teaching.

Preliminary Evaluation of a Tier 2 Mathematics Intervention for First-Grade Students: Using a Theory of Change to Guide Formative Evaluation Activities.

TL;DR: A pilot study examined the efficacy of a Tier 2 first-grade mathematics intervention program targeting whole-number understanding for students at risk in mathematics as mentioned in this paper, using a randomized controlled trial.

Self-Regulated Strategy Instruction in Developmental Writing: A Design Research Project

TL;DR: In this article, a design research project developed and evaluated curriculum for developmental writing classes in community colleges and the core of the curriculum was self-regulated strategy instruction, which was used in many classes.

Integrating Co-design Practices into the Development of Mobile Science Collaboratories

TL;DR: The outcomes presented in this paper point towards the need for additional methods to support co-design that take into consideration future user experiences needed for developing and implementing these types of learning activities.
