Design Experiments in Educational Research

TLDR
Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent and a theoretical orientation as mentioned in this paper, developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them, and the authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and conduct a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment.
Abstract
In this article, the authors first indicate the range of purposes and the variety of settings in which design experiments have been conducted and then delineate five crosscutting features that collectively differentiate design experiments from other methodologies. Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent—“engineering” particular forms of learning—and a theoretical orientation—developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them. The authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and in conducting a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment. Logistical issues, issues of measure, the importance of working through the data systematically, and the need to be explicit about the criteria for making inferences are discussed.

Generalising the pattern rule for visual growth patterns: Actions that support 8 year olds’ thinking

TL;DR: In this article, a teaching experiment was conducted with two classes of students with an average age of eight years and six months and the results showed that young students are capable not only of thinking about the relationship between two data sets, but also of expressing this relationship in a very abstract form.

Instructional-Design Theories and Models: Building a Common Knowledge Base. Volume III.

TL;DR: In this article, a layer theory of design structure is proposed based on an alternative approach to design problem fragmentation that uses artifact function rather than process as the decomposition principle, and layers are defined in terms of multiple design languages used for the solution of layer and sub-layer design problems.

Our Designs and the Social Agendas They Carry

TL;DR: The authors argue that the community of learning scientists is well positioned to build transformative models of what could be, to develop learning and teaching interventions that have impact, and to advance theory that will prove valuable to others.

Digital Technologies and Their Role in Achieving Our Ambitions for Education

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose an education-driven approach to the use of digital technologies to achieve our ambitions for education, which is an alternative to the traditional technology-driven way to upgrade existing educational models.

Re-sourcing teachers’ work and interactions: a collective perspective on resources, their use and transformation

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a review of mathematics teachers' work and interactions with resources, taking a particular perspective, the so-called "collective perspective" on resources, their use and transformation.
