Design Experiments in Educational Research

TLDR
Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent and a theoretical orientation as mentioned in this paper, developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them, and the authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and conduct a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment.
Abstract
In this article, the authors first indicate the range of purposes and the variety of settings in which design experiments have been conducted and then delineate five crosscutting features that collectively differentiate design experiments from other methodologies. Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent—“engineering” particular forms of learning—and a theoretical orientation—developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them. The authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and in conducting a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment. Logistical issues, issues of measure, the importance of working through the data systematically, and the need to be explicit about the criteria for making inferences are discussed.

Findings from a Pre-kindergarten Classroom: Making the Case for STEM in Early Childhood Education

TL;DR: In this paper, a mixed-methods design-based research investigation of a pre-kindergarten (Pre-K) classroom where two early childhood educators are incorporating STEM activities is presented.

Bringing forth mathematical concepts: signifying sensorimotor enactment in fields of promoted action

TL;DR: In this paper, the notion of an "instrumented field of promoted action" was proposed for mathematics education, where children operating in this field first develop environmentally coupled motor-action coordinations, and then introduce new artifacts.

Design and Design Thinking in STEM Education

TL;DR: In this article, the authors build on existing research on design and design thinking, and discuss how students' learning and design-thinking can be developed through design activities in not only engineering and technology, but also other disciplines as well as integrated STEM education.

Research on calculus: what do we know and where do we need to go?

TL;DR: The authors identify four trends in the calculus research literature, starting with identifying misconceptions to investigations of the processes by which students learn particular concepts, evolving into classroom studies, and more recently research on teacher knowledge, beliefs, and practices.
