Design Experiments in Educational Research
TLDR
Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent and a theoretical orientation as mentioned in this paper, developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them, and the authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and conduct a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment.Abstract:
In this article, the authors first indicate the range of purposes and the variety of settings in which design experiments have been conducted and then delineate five crosscutting features that collectively differentiate design experiments from other methodologies. Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent—“engineering” particular forms of learning—and a theoretical orientation—developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them. The authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and in conducting a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment. Logistical issues, issues of measure, the importance of working through the data systematically, and the need to be explicit about the criteria for making inferences are discussed.read more

Developing pedagogical practices for English-language learners: a design-based approach
TL;DR: This article examined the impact of a design-based research approach on teacher development and literacy instruction to English-language learners (ELLs) in second-language learning and teaching and found that teachers' thinking and innovations in teachers' repertoires of practice will bring about new forms of language and literacy learning.

Levels of arithmetic reasoning in solving an open-ended problem
TL;DR: The results of an experimental teaching carried out on 12-year-old students as discussed by the authors showed that within an environment conducive to creativity, which encourages collaboration, exploration and sharing ideas, students can be engaged in developing multiple mathematical strategies, posing new questions, creating informal proofs, showing beauty and elegance and bringing out that probl

Group Learning Activities and Perceived Learning Outcomes.
TL;DR: This paper found that students' evaluations of task characteristics and group constellation are related to their perceived increase in domain knowledge, and task characteristics were related to students' perceived development as primary school teachers, while verbal interaction and engagement partially mediate several relationships between GLA components and learning outcomes.
