Design Experiments in Educational Research

TLDR
Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent and a theoretical orientation as mentioned in this paper, developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them, and the authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and conduct a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment.
Abstract
In this article, the authors first indicate the range of purposes and the variety of settings in which design experiments have been conducted and then delineate five crosscutting features that collectively differentiate design experiments from other methodologies. Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent—“engineering” particular forms of learning—and a theoretical orientation—developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them. The authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and in conducting a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment. Logistical issues, issues of measure, the importance of working through the data systematically, and the need to be explicit about the criteria for making inferences are discussed.

The Teacher as Partner: Exploring Participant Structures, Symmetry, and Identity Work in Scaffolding

TL;DR: In this paper, a participant structure called the teacher as partner is proposed to render the what, why, and how visible while establishing symmetry between teachers and students, and to demystify the process of science and help students identify themselves as ratified participan.

Improving reading comprehension and social studies knowledge in middle school

TL;DR: In this paper, the efficacy of a content acquisition and reading comprehension treatment implemented by eighth grade social studies teachers was evaluated using a within-teacher design, where the students in the treatment conditions scored statistically higher than those in the comparison conditions on all three outcomes: content acquisition, content reading comprehension, and standardized reading comprehension.

A Review of Research Methodologies Used in Studies on Mobile Handheld Devices in K-12 and Higher Education Settings.

TL;DR: A review of empirical based articles to summarise the current research regarding the use of mobile handheld devices in K-12 and higher education settings and discusses some major findings from the research, as well as several limitations of previous empirical studies.

The impact of web-based worked examples and self-explanation on performance, problem solving, and self-efficacy

TL;DR: A design theory approach is taken to creating a Web-based learning tool that uses the notion of a weekly quiz to draw students into an environment that supports the development of fundamental strategies for improving performance and well-structured problem solving.

Facilitating the Transition from Empirical Arguments to Proof.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the theoretical foundation and implementation of an instructional sequence that aimed to help students begin to realize the limitations of empirical arguments as methods for validating mathematical generalizations and see an intellectual need to learn about secure methods for validation (i.e., proofs).
