TLDR
In this paper, infrared thermography (IR) was used to map the surface temperature distribution of solar cells while in the reverse bias mode, and it was observed that some cells exhibited an inhomogeneity of the surface temperatures resulting in localized heating (hot-spot).

Improved outdoor thermography and processing of infrared images for defect detection in PV modules

TL;DR: In this article, an improved outdoor infrared (IR) thermography scheme is presented, which is based on modulating the temperature of PV module through altering the electrical behavior of single cell, that causes temperature changes in series connected cells leading to different temperature conditions.

Hot Spot Risk Analysis on Silicon Cell Modules

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an overview of existing and new approaches for the hot spot analysis of crystalline silicon cells, which can be used for screening of large lots of finished modules or as a final test in module production.

Reconfiguration of PV modules: A tool to get the best compromise between maximization of the extracted power and minimization of localized heating phenomena

TL;DR: By means of the reconfiguration of the PV modules connections and with the help of a proper objective function, it is shown that it is possible to identify, in any operating condition, both the optimal array configuration and the associated optimal operating point that are able to lead to the maximization of the extracted energy during the whole PV array lifetime.
Journal ArticleDOI

Real-time inspection and determination methods of faults on photovoltaic power systems by thermal imaging in Turkey

TL;DR: The results showed that the sampling rate of testing is very critical to get a right comparison and failure types are mainly caused due to active bypass diodes and hotspots on PV modules, non-operative modules and strings, abnormally heated cables/fuses/breakers and interconnection points.

Hot spot investigations on PV modules-new concepts for a test standard and consequences for module design with respect to bypass diodes

TL;DR: The selection of the worst case cell should be improved by measurement of the module current at the characteristic break point of the I-V characteristic, and the hot-spot test procedure of IEC 1215 should be generalised for all types of cell interconnection circuits.

Transition-metal profiles in a multicrystalline silicon ingot

TL;DR: In this paper, the concentrations of transition-metal impurities in a photovoltaic-grade multicrystalline silicon ingot have been measured by neutron activation analysis, and the results show that the concentration of Fe, Co, and Cu are determined by segregation from the liquid-to-solid phase in the central regions of the ingot.

Observation of transition metals at shunt locations in multicrystalline silicon solar cells

TL;DR: By employing a combination of analytical tools including lock-in thermography and synchrotron-based x-ray fluorescence microscopy, transition metals have been identified at shunting locations in two types of low-cost multicrystalline silicon (mc-Si) solar cell materials as discussed by the authors.
