Journal ArticleDOI

The conflicts between strength and toughness

TL;DR: This work focuses on the interplay between the mechanisms that individually contribute to strength and toughness, noting that these phenomena can originate from very different lengthscales in a material's structural architecture.
Journal ArticleDOI

Strong crystal size effect on deformation twinning

TL;DR: A ‘stimulated slip’ model is developed to explain the strong size dependence of deformation twinning in crystals, and the sample size in transition is relatively large and easily accessible in experiments, making the understanding of size dependence relevant for applications.
Journal ArticleDOI

Atomistic modeling of interfaces and their impact on microstructure and properties

TL;DR: An overview of the most recent developments in the area of atomistic modeling with emphasis on interfaces and their impact on microstructure and properties of materials is given in this paper, along with some challenges and future research directions in this field.
Journal ArticleDOI

A review on fundamental of high entropy alloys with promising high–temperature properties

TL;DR: In this paper, the microstructures of HESAs consisting of γ and γ′ phases are similar to that of Ni-base superalloys and refractory HEAs.

Strains and rotations in thin deposited films

TL;DR: In this article, the authors derived expressions for the magnitude and partitioning of ϵ and φ for the case of elastically isotropic materials for a variety of technologically relevant cases.
Journal ArticleDOI

Elasto-plastic behaviour of thin metal films

TL;DR: In this paper, the large extent of the microdeformation stage was determined for tensile deformation of free-standing thin films, as well as for films on substrates deformed by cyclic heating.
Journal ArticleDOI

Elementary Edge and Screw Dislocations Visualized at the Lattice Periodicity Level in the Smectic Phase of Colloidal Rods.

TL;DR: Self-diffusion experiments performed at the individual particle level reveal for the first time nematiclike or "melted" ordering of the defect core, which is compared with the profile predicted by elastic theory.
Journal ArticleDOI

Vickers indentation on the {001} faces of GaAs under infrared illumination and in darkness

TL;DR: In this paper, the spectral dependence of the negative photoplastic effect has been investigated; it was shown that the mechanism responsible for the illumination-induced softening is operative on both sides of the band absorption edge.
Journal ArticleDOI

Yielding transitions and grain-size effects in dislocation theory.

TL;DR: The statistical-thermodynamic dislocation theory developed in previous papers is used here in an analysis of yielding transitions and grain-size effects in polycrystalline solids, finding that the well-known Hall-Petch effects are caused by enhanced strengths of dislocation sources at the edges of grains instead of the commonly assumed resistance to dislocation flow across grain boundaries.
