Disruptive Transportation: The Adoption, Utilization, and Impacts of Ride-Hailing in the United States
TLDR

Author(s): Clewlow, Regina R.; Mishra, Gouri S. | Abstract: The rapid adoption of ride-hailing poses significant challenges for transportation researchers, policymakers, and planners, as there is limited information and data about how these services affect transportation decisions and travel patterns. Given the long-range business, policy, and planning decisions that are required to support transportation infrastructure (including public transit, roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks), there is an urgent need to collect data on the adoption of these new services, and in particular their potential impacts on travel choices. This paper presents findings from a comprehensive travel and residential survey deployed in seven major U.S. cities, in two phases from 2014 to 2016, with a targeted, representative sample of their urban and suburban populations. The purpose of this report is to provide early insight on the adoption of, use, and travel behavior impacts of ride-hailing.read more

What influences travelers to use Uber? Exploring the factors affecting the adoption of on-demand ride services in California
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the factors affecting the adoption of on-demand ride services among millennials and members of the preceding Generation X in California and find that highly educated, older adults are more likely to use ride-sharing services than other groups.

Ridesourcing systems: A framework and review
TL;DR: In this paper, a general framework to describe ridesourcing systems is proposed, which can aid understanding of the interactions between endogenous and exogenous variables, their changes in response to platforms' operational strategies and decisions, multiple system objectives, and market equilibria in a dynamic manner.

The impact of ride-hailing on vehicle miles traveled
TL;DR: This research paper uses a quasi-natural experiment in the Denver, Colorado, region to analyze basic impacts of ride-hailing on transportation efficiency in terms of deadheading, vehicle occupancy, mode replacement, and vehicle miles traveled (VMT).

Do transportation network companies decrease or increase congestion
TL;DR: This research examines whether transportation network companies, such as Uber and Lyft, live up to their stated vision of reducing congestion in major cities, finding that contrary to their vision, TNCs are the biggest contributor to growing traffic congestion in San Francisco.

Ridesourcing, the sharing economy, and the future of cities
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a systematic review of the existing literature concerning the impact of ridesourcing on the efficiency, equity, and sustainability of urban development, and highlight the danger of conceptual confusion and the methodological issues in existing literature.

The High Cost of Free Parking
TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that minimum parking requirements can increase development costs by more than 10 times the impact fees for all other public purposes combined, without considering either the price motorists pay for parking or the cost of providing the required parking spaces.

On-demand high-capacity ride-sharing via dynamic trip-vehicle assignment
TL;DR: A more general mathematical model for real-time high-capacity ride-sharing that scales to large numbers of passengers and trips and dynamically generates optimal routes with respect to online demand and vehicle locations is presented.

Disruptive Change in the Taxi Business: The Case of Uber
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the efficiency of ride sharing services vis-a-vis taxis by comparing the capacity utilization rate of UberX drivers with that of traditional taxi drivers in five cities.

Greenhouse Gas Emission Impacts of Carsharing in North America
Elliot Martin,Susan Shaheen +1 more
TL;DR: The results show that a majority of households joining carsharing are increasing their emissions by gaining access to automobiles, however, individually, these increases are small and the collective emission reductions outweigh the collective emissions increases, which implies that carshared reduces GHG emissions as a whole.
