TLDR
In this paper, a meta-analysis attempts to bridge local and regional scales of LUCC by demonstrating the ways in which previously published case studies can be compared and used for a broader regional synthesis in the tropics.Abstract:
z Bridging understanding of local environmental change with regional and global patterns of land-use and land-cover change (LUCC) remains a key goal and challenge for our understanding of global environmental change. This meta-analysis attempts to bridge local and regional scales of LUCC by demonstrating the ways in which previously published case studies can be compared and used for a broader regional synthesis in the tropics. In addition to providing results from a meta-analysis, this paper suggests ways to make future case studies more widely comparable.read more

Fuzzy-Set Social Science
TL;DR: F fuzzy sets allow a far richer dialogue between ideas and evidence in social research than previously possible, and can be carefully tailored to fit evolving theoretical concepts, sharpening quantitative tools with in-depth knowledge gained through qualitative, case-oriented inquiry.

From land cover change to land function dynamics: a major challenge to improve land characterization
TL;DR: It is argued that more attention should be given to land use and land functions and linkages between these, and new methods to map and quantify land function dynamics will enhance the ability to understand and model land system change and adequately inform policies and planning.

The yield gap of global grain production: A spatial analysis
TL;DR: In this paper, an econometric approach was combined with spatial analysis to explore the maximum attainable yield, yield gap, and efficiencies of wheat, maize, and rice production.

Rural household demographics, livelihoods and the environment

TL;DR: There is strong evidence that dependence on natural resources intensifies when households lose human and social capital through adult morbidity and mortality, and qualified evidence for the influence of environmental factors on household decision-making regarding fertility and migration.

Manifestations and underlying drivers of agricultural land use change in Europe
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a systematic review of case study evidence on manifestations and underlying drivers for agricultural land use change in Europe, and find that farmers were very important as moderators between underlying drivers and manifestations of agricultural land-use change.

Governing the Commons: The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action
TL;DR: In this paper, an institutional approach to the study of self-organization and self-governance in CPR situations is presented, along with a framework for analysis of selforganizing and selfgoverning CPRs.

Fingerprints of global warming on wild animals and plants

TL;DR: A consistent temperature-related shift is revealed in species ranging from molluscs to mammals and from grasses to trees, suggesting that a significant impact of global warming is already discernible in animal and plant populations.

The Struggle to Govern the Commons
TL;DR: Promising strategies for addressing critical problems of the environment include dialogue among interested parties, officials, and scientists; complex, redundant, and layered institutions; a mix of institutional types; and designs that facilitate experimentation, learning, and change.

The conditions of agricultural growth
TL;DR: In this paper, Boserup argues that changes and improvements occur from within agricultural communities, and that improvements are governed not simply by external interference, but by those communities themselves using extensive analyses of the costs and productivity of the main systems of traditional agriculture.

Veldkamp,Coleen Vogel,Jianchu Xu +25 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors track some of the major myths on driving forces of land cover change and propose alternative pathways of change that are better supported by case study evidence, concluding that neither population nor poverty alone constitute the sole and major underlying causes of land-cover change worldwide.
