A review of the extant literature from a public health perspective leads to the conclusion that HIV criminal laws undermine public health.
Abstract
Objectives To review the extant literature on HIV criminal laws, and to determine the impact of these laws on public health practice Methods The available research on this topic was obtained and reviewed Results The extant literature addressed three main topics: people’s awareness of HIV criminal laws; people’s perceptions of HIV criminal laws; and the potential effects of HIV criminal laws on people’s sexual, HIVstatus disclosure and healthcare-seeking practices Within these categories, the literature demonstrated a high level of awareness of HIV criminal laws, but a poor comprehension of these laws For perceptions, on the whole, the quantitative research identified support for, while the qualitative literature indicated opposition to, these laws Lastly, the behavioural effects of HIV criminal laws appear to be complex and non-linear Conclusions A review of the extant literature from a public health perspective leads to the conclusion that HIV criminal laws undermine public health

Strategies to Increase HIV Testing Among MSM: A Synthesis of the Literature

TL;DR: It is found that social network-based strategies, community-based testing, HIV self-testing, and modifications to the traditional clinic-based model can effectively reach a subset of MSM, but success was often context-specific and there are significant gaps in evidence.

The impact of criminalization of HIV non-disclosure on the healthcare engagement of women living with HIV in Canada: a comprehensive review of the evidence.

TL;DR: Public health advocates argue that the overly broad use of the criminal law against PLWH undermines efforts to engage individuals in healthcare and complicates gendered barriers to linkage and retention in care experienced by women living with HIV (WLWH).

Criminalization of HIV Exposure: A Review of Empirical Studies in the United States.

TL;DR: This review of literature identifies and describes US empirical studies on the criminalization of HIV exposure, examines findings on key questions about these laws, highlights knowledge gaps, and sets a course for future research.

Universal voluntary HIV testing with immediate antiretroviral therapy as a strategy for elimination of HIV transmission: a mathematical model

TL;DR: A theoretical strategy of universal voluntary HIV testing and immediate treatment with ART, combined with present prevention approaches, could have a major effect on severe generalised HIV/AIDS epidemics.

Estimating sexual transmission of HIV from persons aware and unaware that they are infected with the virus in the USA.

TL;DR: The results indicate that the HIV/AIDS epidemic can be lessened substantially by increasing the number of HIV-positive persons who are aware of their status.

High rates of forward transmission events after acute/early HIV-1 infection. Commentary

TL;DR: In this article, a population-based phylogenetic approach was used to characterize human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-transmission dynamics in Quebec, where early infection accounts for approximately half of onward transmissions in this urban North American study.
