Breast cancer metastatic dormancy and emergence, a role for adjuvant statin therapy

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that statins reduce tumor cell growth and survival, in part due to suppression of Ras and Akt signaling, and these effects are limited to the membrane-permeant lipophilic statins.

Organoids of liver diseases: From bench to bedside.

TL;DR: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the development of liver organoids, the existing and potential applications of liver regenerative medicine, the pathogenesis of liver disease heterogeneity, and drug screening.

In Vitro Pluripotent Stem Cell Differentiation to Hepatocyte Ceases Further Maturation at an Equivalent Stage of E15 in Mouse Embryonic Liver Development

TL;DR: A meta-analysis of cross-species transcriptome data of in vitro differentiation of human PSCs to H LCs and in vivo mouse embryonic liver development to identify the developmental stage at which HLC maturation was blocked at found HLCs to cease further maturation at an equivalent stage of mouse embryonic day (E)13-15.

Hepatic population derived from human pluripotent stem cells is effectively increased by selective removal of undifferentiated stem cells using YM155.

TL;DR: It is suggested that the removal of USCs using YM155 could improve the quantity and quality of induced hepatocytes and eliminate the potential risk of teratoma formation.

Maintenance of human haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells in vitro using a chemical cocktail.

TL;DR: It is found that a combination of CHIR-99021, Forskolin and OAC1 (CFO) maintained human CD34-positive cells in vitro and had enhanced expression of human HSPC markers and increased haematopoietic re-populating ability in immune-deficient mice.

Global epidemiology of hepatitis C virus infection

TL;DR: Because there is no vaccine and no post-exposure prophylaxis for HCV, the focus of primary prevention efforts should be safer blood supply in the developing world, safe injection practices in health care and other settings, and decreasing the number of people who initiate injection drug use.

Genome sequence of the Brown Norway rat yields insights into mammalian evolutionRat Genome Sequencing Project ConsortiumNature200442849352115057822

Abstract: The laboratory rat (Rattus norvegicus) is an indispensable tool in experimental medicine and drug development, having made inestimable contributions to human health. We report here the genome sequence of the Brown Norway (BN) rat strain. The sequence represents a high-quality ‘draft’ covering over 90% of the genome. The BN rat sequence is the third complete mammalian genome to be deciphered, and three-way comparisons with the human and mouse genomes resolve details of mammalian evolution. This first comprehensive analysis includes genes and proteins and their relation to human disease, repeated sequences, comparative genome-wide studies of mammalian orthologous chromosomal regions and rearrangement breakpoints, reconstruction of ancestral karyotypes and the events leading to existing species, rates of variation, and lineage-specific and lineage-independent evolutionary events such as expansion of gene families, orthology relations and protein evolution.

Pancreatic endoderm derived from human embryonic stem cells generates glucose-responsive insulin-secreting cells in vivo

TL;DR: It is shown that pancreatic endoderm derived from human embryonic stem (hES) cells efficiently generates glucose-responsive endocrine cells after implantation into mice, and it is demonstrated that implantation of hES cell–derived pancreaticEndoderm protects against streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia.
