TLDR
In this paper, a comprehensive overview of image correlation for shape, motion and deformation measurements is provided. But, the authors do not discuss the effect of out-of-plane motion on 2D measurements.
Abstract
Image Correlation for Shape, Motion and Deformation Measurements provides a comprehensive overview of data extraction through image analysis. Readers will find and in-depth look into various single- and multi-camera models (2D-DIC and 3D-DIC), two- and three-dimensional computer vision, and volumetric digital image correlation (VDIC). Fundamentals of accurate image matching are described, along with presentations of both new methods for quantitative error estimates in correlation-based motion measurements, and the effect of out-of-plane motion on 2D measurements. Thorough appendices offer descriptions of continuum mechanics formulations, methods for local surface strain estimation and non-linear optimization, as well as terminology in statistics and probability. With equal treatment of computer vision fundamentals and techniques for practical applications, this volume is both a reference for academic and industry-based researchers and engineers, as well as a valuable companion text for appropriate vision-based educational offerings.

Evaluation of fracture processes under shear with the use of DIC technique in fly ash concrete and accurate measurement of crack path lengths with the use of a new crack tip tracking method

TL;DR: In this article, the optical and contactless DIC technique was used for the examination of fracture processes in concrete with fly ash under shear loading, and the results showed that unmodified concrete are characterised by greater brittleness, whereas composites made on the basis of the binary binder behave as quasi-plastic materials in the fracture process.

An active imaging digital image correlation method for deformation measurement insensitive to ambient light

TL;DR: In this paper, an easy-to-implement yet effective monochromatic light illuminated active imaging DIC method was proposed for obtaining high-quality images suitable for high fidelity deformation measurement.

Extracting inter-particle forces in opaque granular materials: Beyond photoelasticity

TL;DR: In this article, the Granular Element Method (GEM) is used to infer inter-particle force in real granular materials using an improved version of the methodology known as the GEM.

Quality assessment of speckle patterns for DIC by consideration of both systematic errors and random errors

TL;DR: This work proposes to assess the quality of speckle patterns by estimating the root mean square error (RMSE) of DIC, which is the square root of the sum of square of systematic error and random error.

Whole-field strain analysis and damage assessment of adhesively bonded patch repair of CFRP laminates using 3D-DIC and FEA

TL;DR: In this article, an experimental study is carried out using digital image correlation (DIC) technique to analyze the behavior of adhesively bonded patch repair of carbon/epoxy unidirectional composite laminates under tensile loading.
