TLDR
In this paper, a comprehensive overview of image correlation for shape, motion and deformation measurements is provided. But, the authors do not discuss the effect of out-of-plane motion on 2D measurements.
Abstract
Image Correlation for Shape, Motion and Deformation Measurements provides a comprehensive overview of data extraction through image analysis. Readers will find and in-depth look into various single- and multi-camera models (2D-DIC and 3D-DIC), two- and three-dimensional computer vision, and volumetric digital image correlation (VDIC). Fundamentals of accurate image matching are described, along with presentations of both new methods for quantitative error estimates in correlation-based motion measurements, and the effect of out-of-plane motion on 2D measurements. Thorough appendices offer descriptions of continuum mechanics formulations, methods for local surface strain estimation and non-linear optimization, as well as terminology in statistics and probability. With equal treatment of computer vision fundamentals and techniques for practical applications, this volume is both a reference for academic and industry-based researchers and engineers, as well as a valuable companion text for appropriate vision-based educational offerings.

The Mechanisms of Deformation and Damage of Mudstones: A Micro-scale Study Combining ESEM and DIC

TL;DR: In this paper, a specially designed apparatus is developed to allow in-situ uniaxial compression tests on samples with controlled humidity states in the ESEM chamber, and three types of deformation bands involving different mechanisms have been classified: orthogonal (compaction of macro-pores and closure of pre-existing cracks), parallel (micro-cracking) and inclined (shear deformation) to the uniaXial compression direction, and they strongly interact: for instance, a high-strained shear band may result in tensile micro-cracks

Microscopic analysis of failure in woven carbon fabric laminates coupled with digital image correlation and acoustic emission

TL;DR: In this article, a failure analysis of woven fabric carbon-reinforced polymeric composites under tensile and flexural loading was performed. And the authors used the GAP function to find the optimal number of clusters for acoustic emission data, which is suitable for classifying elongated data points in the vector space of acoustic data.

Strain field measurements over 3000 °C using 3D-Digital image correlation

TL;DR: In this paper, a 3D-DIC system was used to measure the thermal deformation of a tungsten sample above 3000 °C, and three schemes based on blue light sources, self-radiating light sources and a dual wavelength optical filter were designed for three temperature ranges from room temperature to 3067 °C.

A review on the tensile behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer composites under varying strain rates and temperatures

TL;DR: In this paper, the tensile strength of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites is investigated under different strain rates and temperatures, and failure patterns of FRP materials are also reviewed at different strain levels and temperatures.

Impact of Speckle Pattern Parameters on DIC Strain Resolution Calculated from In-situ SEM Experiments

TL;DR: In this article, a systematic study was performed to determine how speckle patterning parameters (speckle density and shape) affect strain resolution of DIC using SEM imaging.
