TLDR
In this paper, a comprehensive overview of image correlation for shape, motion and deformation measurements is provided. But, the authors do not discuss the effect of out-of-plane motion on 2D measurements.Abstract:
Image Correlation for Shape, Motion and Deformation Measurements provides a comprehensive overview of data extraction through image analysis. Readers will find and in-depth look into various single- and multi-camera models (2D-DIC and 3D-DIC), two- and three-dimensional computer vision, and volumetric digital image correlation (VDIC). Fundamentals of accurate image matching are described, along with presentations of both new methods for quantitative error estimates in correlation-based motion measurements, and the effect of out-of-plane motion on 2D measurements. Thorough appendices offer descriptions of continuum mechanics formulations, methods for local surface strain estimation and non-linear optimization, as well as terminology in statistics and probability. With equal treatment of computer vision fundamentals and techniques for practical applications, this volume is both a reference for academic and industry-based researchers and engineers, as well as a valuable companion text for appropriate vision-based educational offerings.read more

Elimination of systematic error in digital image correlation caused by intensity interpolation by introducing position randomness to subset points
TL;DR: Numerical simulations and real-world experiments demonstrated that as the maximum of the random offsets increases, the amplitude of the sinusoidal-shaped systematic error changes from positive to negative, and if an appropriate random offset is selected, systematic error can be considerably reduced.

Non-contact Measurement of the Shrinkage and Calculation of Porosity During the Drying of Banana
TL;DR: In this paper, a novel non-intrusive technique (stereo-correlation) was used to determine the apparent volume of a banana in convective drying condition, and the volume was calculated using the 3D Digital Image Correlation method (3D-DIC), which provided 3D shape of the banana during drying.

Optimized optical setup for DIC in rock mechanics
TL;DR: In this paper, a specific optical setup for Digital Image Correlation (DIC) has been developed at the Sol ids Mechanics Laboratory, Ecole Polytechnique, and two procedures to optimize the experimental setup and enhance the full-field strain measurement accuracy are presented.

In-vivo deformation measurements of the human heart by 3D Digital Image Correlation
TL;DR: The results show that the natural pattern of the heart should be sufficient for DIC, but better and more accurate results could be obtained with improved contrast conditions, and DIC has a potential to be used as a sensitive tool for the surgeon to monitor the cardiac function.
