TLDR
In this paper, a comprehensive overview of image correlation for shape, motion and deformation measurements is provided. But, the authors do not discuss the effect of out-of-plane motion on 2D measurements.
Abstract
Image Correlation for Shape, Motion and Deformation Measurements provides a comprehensive overview of data extraction through image analysis. Readers will find and in-depth look into various single- and multi-camera models (2D-DIC and 3D-DIC), two- and three-dimensional computer vision, and volumetric digital image correlation (VDIC). Fundamentals of accurate image matching are described, along with presentations of both new methods for quantitative error estimates in correlation-based motion measurements, and the effect of out-of-plane motion on 2D measurements. Thorough appendices offer descriptions of continuum mechanics formulations, methods for local surface strain estimation and non-linear optimization, as well as terminology in statistics and probability. With equal treatment of computer vision fundamentals and techniques for practical applications, this volume is both a reference for academic and industry-based researchers and engineers, as well as a valuable companion text for appropriate vision-based educational offerings.

Mechanical characterization of composite materials by optical techniques: A review

TL;DR: The paper emphasizes the strengths derived from the employment of full-field methods when the strain field of an anisotropic material must be evaluated, in contrast to the use of conventional measurement techniques, which provide single values of the measured quantities unable to offer thorough descriptions of deformation distribution.

Cross‐Correlation and Differential Technique Combination to Determine Displacement Fields

TL;DR: In this article, a method to measure the displacement fields on the surface of planar objects with sub-pixel resolution, by combining image correlation with a differential technique, is presented.

Uniaxial experimental study of the acoustic emission and deformation behavior of composite rock based on 3D digital image correlation (DIC)

TL;DR: In this paper, a series of composite rock specimens with different dip angles, which were made from two types of rock-like material with different strength, were used to study the effect of bedding plane inclination on deformation and strength during uniaxial loading.

Advanced detector signal acquisition and electron beam scanning for high resolution SEM imaging

TL;DR: Mitigation of beam scanning defects using detector sampling approaches and an adaptive model for settling time is shown to produce higher resolution SEM images, at faster image acquisition times, with a means to quantify the different response functions for various beam deflectors and detectors including those for electrons and ions.
