Incidence and clinical importance of perioperative histamine release: randomised study of volume loading and antihistamines after induction of anaesthesia

TLDR
The histamine-related disturbances under anaesthesia were remarkable for their severity (even with small rises in histamine concentrations), for the prevalence of bradycardia, and for the absence of skin signs.

Pre-treatment of anaphylaxis, does it really work?

TL;DR: This paper presents a proposed algorithm for the management of airway obstruction with the Proseal laryngeal mask airway and some examples of how this algorithm may be implemented in clinical practice.

A short history of theoretical surgery.

TL;DR: The concept of Theoretical Surgery has to be understood in the context of the scientific spirit after post-war Germany, where there was a lack of communication with other disciplines and consequently there were no attempts to integrate these disciplines into surgery and surgical research.

Antibiotics change contractility of guinea pig aorta and trachea to histamine after a short exposure to LPS

TL;DR: An in vitro study was designed to test whether LPS alone or in combination with clinically used antibiotics have long term effects on the response of vascular or tracheal muscle to histamine.

Randomisation and baseline comparisons in clinical trials.

Douglas G. Altman, +1 more
- 20 Jan 1990 -
TL;DR: 80 reports of randomised clinical trials in four leading general medical journals were reviewed and the reporting of the methodology of randomisation was inadequate, and the handling of comparisons of baseline characteristics was inadequate.

Perioperative myocardial ischemia in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery—I: Incidence and severity during the 4 Day perioperative period☆

TL;DR: The electrocardiographic changes consistent with ischemia during the 4 day perioperative period were documented and characterized in 100 patients with or at risk for coronary artery disease undergoing noncardiac surgery and postoperative ischemic episodes were the most severe.

Anaphylactoid reactions during anaesthesia. Seven years' experience of intradermal testing

TL;DR: Pancuronium is suggested to be the least likely currently available agent to provoke a major anaphylactoid reaction and Predisposing factors in patients sensitive to muscle relaxants were: female sex, previous allergy and atopy.

Human basophil/mast cell releasability. IX. Heterogeneity of the effects of opioids on mediator release.

TL;DR: The effects of increasing concentrations of three opioids were studied on the release of preformed and de novo synthesized chemical mediators from human peripheral blood basophils and mast cells isolated from skin tissues or lung parenchyma.
