Incidence and clinical importance of perioperative histamine release: randomised study of volume loading and antihistamines after induction of anaesthesia

TLDR
The histamine-related disturbances under anaesthesia were remarkable for their severity (even with small rises in histamine concentrations), for the prevalence of bradycardia, and for the absence of skin signs.

How safe is gelatin? A systematic review and meta-analysis of gelatin-containing plasma expanders vs crystalloids and albumin

TL;DR: Until well-designed randomized controlled trials show that gelatin is safe, it is cautioned against the use of gelatins because cheaper and safer fluid alternatives are available.
Journal ArticleDOI

Aprotinin. A review of its pharmacology and therapeutic efficacy in reducing blood loss associated with cardiac surgery.

TL;DR: The types and incidences of adverse events reported with aprotinin therapy are generally consistent with those associated with major cardiac surgery, and are not significantly different from those observed in control groups.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hemodilution in Clinical Surgery: State of the Art 1996

TL;DR: Hemodilution is feasible and relatively cost-effective, and it minimizes adverse effects associated with transfusion of homologous blood, particularly transmission of viral diseases, immunosuppression, and infectious complications.

Anaphylactic reactions to aprotinin reexposure in cardiac surgery: Relation to antiaprotinin immunoglobulin G and E antibodies

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the incidence of anaphylactic reactions in patients reexposed to aprotinin and the relation to preformed antiaprotinin immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgE antibodies.

Randomisation and baseline comparisons in clinical trials.

Douglas G. Altman, +1 more
- 20 Jan 1990 -
TL;DR: 80 reports of randomised clinical trials in four leading general medical journals were reviewed and the reporting of the methodology of randomisation was inadequate, and the handling of comparisons of baseline characteristics was inadequate.

Perioperative myocardial ischemia in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery—I: Incidence and severity during the 4 Day perioperative period☆

TL;DR: The electrocardiographic changes consistent with ischemia during the 4 day perioperative period were documented and characterized in 100 patients with or at risk for coronary artery disease undergoing noncardiac surgery and postoperative ischemic episodes were the most severe.

Anaphylactoid reactions during anaesthesia. Seven years' experience of intradermal testing

TL;DR: Pancuronium is suggested to be the least likely currently available agent to provoke a major anaphylactoid reaction and Predisposing factors in patients sensitive to muscle relaxants were: female sex, previous allergy and atopy.

Human basophil/mast cell releasability. IX. Heterogeneity of the effects of opioids on mediator release.

TL;DR: The effects of increasing concentrations of three opioids were studied on the release of preformed and de novo synthesized chemical mediators from human peripheral blood basophils and mast cells isolated from skin tissues or lung parenchyma.
