Modulation of rat parotid cell alpha-adrenergic responsiveness at a step subsequent to receptor activation.

TLDR
The findings suggest that parotid gland cells from older rats display an altered alpha-adrenergic signal transduction mechanism at a site between the receptor and phospholipid turnover/Ca2+ mobilization.

Changes in the mechanisms of hormone and neurotransmitter action during aging: Current status of the role of receptor and post-receptor alterations. A review

TL;DR: A catalogue of studies in responsiveness to hormones and neurotransmitters during aging attempts to catalogue studies which have been carried out to date, and discusses possible reasons for discrepancies as well as future research directions.

Involvement of mitochondria in the age-dependent decrease in calcium uptake of rat brain synaptosomes.

TL;DR: It was concluded that variations in the driving force for calcium uptake were not the cause for impaired calcium transport in mitochondria from aged rat brain, and it is suggested that alterations in lipid dynamics are not involved in the impaired calcium uptake observed in brain mitochondria in aged rats.

Salivary gland fluid secretion during aging.

TL;DR: Salivary gland function is generally well-preserved in healthy older persons and in the laboratory rat, and improved function may result from pharmacological therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of age on second messenger generation in neutrophils.

TL;DR: A reduction with age in the metabolically active precursor pools responsible for the generation of IP3 and DAG is associated with reductions in the concentration of critically important phosphoinositides, resulting in diminution in the ability to produce key second messengers.

A simple method for the isolation and purification of total lipides from animal tissues.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors described a simplified version of the method and reported the results of a study of its application to different tissues, including the efficiency of the washing procedure in terms of the removal from tissue lipides of some non-lipide substances of special biochemical interest.

The Attractions of Proteins for Small Molecules and Ions

TL;DR: The number and variety of known compounrjs between proteins and small molecules are increasing rapidly and make a fascinating story as discussed by the authors, and there are many compounds of serum albumin, which was used during the war by many chemists, most of whom found at least one 6ew compound.

Relationship between the inhibition constant (K1) and the concentration of inhibitor which causes 50 per cent inhibition (I50) of an enzymatic reaction.

TL;DR: The analysis described shows K I does not equal I 50 when competitive inhibition kinetics apply; however, K I is equal to I 50 under conditions of either noncompetitive or uncompetitive kinetics.
