TLDR
This review discusses combinatorial biological protocols, that is, bacterial cell surface and phage-display technologies, in the selection of short sequences that have affinity to (noble) metals, semiconducting oxides and other technological compounds.Abstract:
Proteins, through their unique and specific interactions with other macromolecules and inorganics, control structures and functions of all biological hard and soft tissues in organisms. Molecular biomimetics is an emerging field in which hybrid technologies are developed by using the tools of molecular biology and nanotechnology. Taking lessons from biology, polypeptides can now be genetically engineered to specifically bind to selected inorganic compounds for applications in nano- and biotechnology. This review discusses combinatorial biological protocols, that is, bacterial cell surface and phage-display technologies, in the selection of short sequences that have affinity to (noble) metals, semiconducting oxides and other technological compounds. These genetically engineered proteins for inorganics (GEPIs) can be used in the assembly of functional nanostructures. Based on the three fundamental principles of molecular recognition, self-assembly and DNA manipulation, we highlight successful uses of GEPI in nanotechnology.read more

Interactions of biomolecules with inorganic materials: principles, applications and future prospects
TL;DR: The goal of this overview is to present biomolecule–inorganic materials interactions and the current understanding using selected examples, to elaborate on approaches that have been used to expose the mechanisms underpinning such interactions and to identify the ‘rules’ or ‘guiding principles’ that govern interactions.

Molecular dynamics studies of the interactions of water and amino acid analogues with quartz surfaces.
Rebecca Notman,Tiffany R. Walsh +1 more
TL;DR: Molecular dynamics simulations of fully hydroxylated alpha-quartz surfaces in explicit water find that the free energy change to move methane from bulk water to the (1010) interface is favorable, and draw some useful insights into the possible mechanisms by which biomolecules, in particular peptides and proteins, bind to quartz and other silica surfaces.

TL;DR: The peptide motif essential for the specific interaction with the stereoregular polymer was revealed and the phage expressing ELWRPTR most strongly bound to the polymer, and the selectivity was also the best.

A study of the nucleation and growth processes in the synthesis of colloidal gold
TL;DR: In this paper, a preliminary survey with the electron microscope of various preparations of colloidal gold, a study was made of the process of nucleation and growth in gold colloids, and it was shown that nucleating agents may be identified with reducing agents which form a mixed polymer with chlorauric ion before the reduction to the nucleus takes place.

Filamentous fusion phage: novel expression vectors that display cloned antigens on the virion surface
TL;DR: Foreign DNA fragments can be inserted into filamentous phage gene III to create a fusion protein with the foreign sequence in the middle that is incorporated into the virion, which retains infectivity and displays the foreign amino acids in immunologically accessible form.
